I just wondered who else on here is fulfilling a childhood dream by having a horse of their own?

I didn't have a pony as a child (although I had riding lessons and spent all my weekends at the local riding stables helping out). I bought my own horse when I was 21, but we never quite clicked and I sold him and when I was looking for my next horse I suddenly realised I could get a pony

I've had Murphy for 2 years and I am totally fulfilling my childhood dream of having a hairy pony of my own! I charge around fields on Murphy, giggling to myself like a little kid

So...who else is living their childhood horsey dream?

Yep!!! From the age of 10 I started helping out at a riding school and desperatly wanted a horse, literally dreamed of it all the time. I bought one at 22

I'm not sure you could call it a childhood dream as I am only 18 now, but I have wanted a horse since I was 2 and on Saturday that dream is becoming a reality!

Me

, only I was 43 when I got Tiggy.

I rode from the age of ten. I was horse mad from the age of seven (much to the surprise of my totally non-horsey family

). I spent every spare minute at riding schools, then I worked full time with them. When I was eighteen I went and worked on a ranch in the USA.

Me too without a doubt, I rode from the age of 7 and helped out at the riding school every hour I possibly could, but my parents couldn't afford a pony despite me leaving pleading letters on my parent's pillows before I went to bed (with all the workings out on how I would pay for the pony with my pocket money!!). Financially I was never in position to buy my own and I began to think it would never happen. But then 2 years ago at ripe age of 37 I was left some money and my dream came true:

When I phoned my Mum and Dad to say George had arrived, they said I sounded so excited that they thought they had 7 year old me on the phone!

Me too. I bought JJ when i was 19 i think.
As a kid i always wanted a palomino welshie - 15years later and i have this pretty lady

How have you people managed to buy one at the age of 21-22? I'm 22 now and can't afford one :-( Maybe i need to save my pennies more or are you just working in very good jobs :-D

My first horse was very very cheap...and I stopped going out, buying clothes, having a life etc etc...all completely worth it

Yep ! I fulfilled my childhood dream 15months ago when I got my boy.
I am the wrong side of 40! I learnt to ride at 8 and then had a pony on loan but didn't look after her just rode her. I gave up for quite a while while I had my children then got back into it and shared horses etc. and finally got my dream come true on Valentines Day a gift last year from my partner!

I worked sixty hours a week as an apprentice on a yard, earning a pitiful wage but more importantly, free livery! And my horse is an insurance write off, destined to be PTS and needed complete re-schooling!!

Me, I had 9 months of lessons age nine a couple of share ponies I hacked etc in my teens, worked on a polo yard and in a riding school. I got Lady on full loan from a rescue centre when I was 19 and finally brought my own horse 3 years ago age 27

Wow, ok i feel bad now, i love horses more than ANYTHING and am currently sharing one. I did have my own when i was 15 (which dad bought) but sold him a couple of years later. I am absolutely obsessed about owning one of my own again and impaitent about it too. HOWEVER, i go out every weekend clubbing etc with my friends, go to cinema, meals, buy sooo many clothes. Ok i NEED to stop and save, save save, know it'll be worth it in the end.

Well done to everyone who bought one young (well to everyone who bought one anyway)

Me, me!! I'm 33 (34 this year) I wanted a horse AND a side saddle since I was a little girl. I used to play with my Barbie horses (until I was old enough to have lessons) and even had a Barbie horse that had a pink side saddle (this one:

that I dyed black with a felt tip marker so it would look like a "real" side saddle!

Now i have the real thing (both of them!)

Me!

I got Charlie when I was 17, I had him on loan for a year whilst I saved up for him and then I brought him with my hard earned cash. I think that made saving a lot easier as if I hadn't have saved enough he would have gone back to his owners.

As a child I was completely and utterly obsessed with anything horsey. Every car journey I would stare out of the window just to catch a glimpse of any horse we may pass, all I ever thought about was horses, all I ever dreamed about was horses. I know it probably sounds silly but I actually think not having a horse / pony during my school years made me get worst results then I could have done as literally every though was about horses and how much I wanted to be around them

I'm 21 and still that dreaming child. I still stare out of windows at horses (even when i'm driving sometime, whoops!) But i know it will happen and i love these threads- Especially gorgeous george, you always make me smile, you just completely epitomise(?) my dreams!

Ahh this thread reminds me of why I stop for the masses of children who want to stroke F when we're out hacking the more touristey places. Because I was once that little girl who would have wanted to go up to and stroke the ponies I saw out! Hopefully I make a few little girls happy for a few minutes every time, even if hacks take 1/2 hr longer than expected!

What a great thread

I had my first riding lesson when I was 3 years old and that sealed my fate ...

Parents wern't interested in my constant nagging for a pony, so at the age of 7 I would walk 3 miles to the nearest riding school to help out. Just to stand next to a horse in the stalls and drink in that horsey smell was heaven. After working hard all day Saturday and Sunday I might be lucky enough to have a freebie group lesson

I bought my first horse at 24 then sold her a year later when I got married and moved away (will always regret it - selling her, not getting married
grin.gif
). Then after 13 years away, I borrowed £500 from my father to find my dream horse, something in black, big and a mare. First horse I looked at bought me, a 15.3hh 15 y/o chestnut gelding, gelded at 12 and raced all his life. Oh boy! Everything had changed in my years away, feed, suppliments, riding, it was a minefield, but he taught me so much.

Be careful what you wish for 'cos you might just get it and I now have 6

Lovely to read all your stories, its truely amazing what you can achieve if you want it enough

You sound as bad as me !! I still remember being desperate to see a horse never mind touch or sit on one !! The joys of being a townie growing up... I always stop for kids, and have on occasion had kids sit on Bonnie (as long as I'm at her head she's as safe as houses...I even have a polly products hat that I can adjust to fit kiddies. I am such a big softie
