But then again if some were left to look after their own on their own. I dread to think what may become of the poor horse?
I think anyone who owns a horse these days should have to pass a basic care course soat least they know when something is wrong etc., Looking after your own is when you really get to know your horse properley.
I work at a full livery yard. Have been there 2 months and have not yet met 2 horses owners. All of the horses are well care for but I could not have a horse and not go and see it at least.
George is on full livery, I go and see him everyday - I love it and George loves it - he doesn't give a hoot who mucks him out, makes up his feeds etc.
Do I sense Shilasdair that you are having a little wind up session??!!
I personally have my mare on full livery not because I am incapable of looking after her myself (she is the first horse of mine to ever be put on full livery!) but more due to me being in my final year of university. I do however go up to the yard at least once a day, and because she is on full livery it means the time I do spend at the yard is quality time between me and my horse. Like gorgeous_george said, I really don't think my mare cares who mucks her out or mixes her feed!

I don't think full livery is necessarily a bad thing when the owner is still actively involved in the riding and the welfare of the horse/pony in question. I think some people are just super busy! God knows how my mum found time to help me with the ponies when she was working 50 hours per week, running the local Brownies and looking after little sis and I. I do think it becomes unacceptable when owners do not visit their horses from one week to the next though - personally I'm going to go for DIY when I start hunting for my next 4 legged friend this time next year. Then again - maybe assisted as I will have to work all hours god sends to afford 4 legged friend in the first place lol!
Students never work!!! LMAO. I was in second year this academic year and was managing to read 3 novels per week for degree and hold down 2 part time jobs - not all of us are idle binge drinkers honestly!! Lol.

Yes, I agree.
The only alternative is to have my arrangement; crappy Full Livery and end up doing it all yourself!

Is there anything you do, in terms of your behaviour or dress code, for example, that might lead the grooms to consider you unprofessional/tasteless/mad and thus colour their behaviour towards you?
Just trying to help.

Not at all I was going to be on part livery during the winter but in the end stayed DIY as pony hated being stabled so not much point paying for the service as he lived out. However he does get hay in the winter put out in the field and I pay for that service as it part of the conditions for the living out ponies.
For me it would mean that if he was in he would be fed at the same time each morning as the other horse, also that when I got there after work I could spend time with him rather than mucking out and also someone could bring him in before it got dark and turn him out after it got light as our fields are far from the yard and very dark.
Perhaps the OP means full livery as in also being ridden and exercised and groomed etc not just being mucked out, turned out and fed.
I don't think so. It's not just my horses they don't look after properly.
They might well think I'm mad though - or at the very least eccentric due to my stripey socks and fondness for pink.

Am I the only one who thinks it is a disgrace that so many people don't look after their own horses?

I could not agree more. However as my current situation involves free riding on a horse on full livery, there is something rather special about sauntering up to the yard, riding someone elses horse for free, and never having to feed/muck out/poo pick or even get my hands dirty
But then J is the best owner I could ever hope for too
