A good few years ago, a friend of mine had a cross country accident which has lead to her living with a neurological disorder which effects movement in all four of her limbs. Before her accident she contested county level showing and riding club cross country however now she is a dressage convert.
Since January she has been riding for Para Dressage teams and has excelled beyond belief, considering she couldnt stand dressage, she has exceeded all expectations and made the most of her unfortunate circumstance. On the 1st-2nd June she was competing at the British Para Dressage Home International Championships as part of a team competition whereby she claimed the highest score of the weekend at 72.14%!
She has now unfortunately at the stage where she may no longer be able to compete at this level due to the lack of financial support. There has been discussions about her reaching the Olympics in Rio yet she is 'too old for funding' She is 32, unable to work due to her disability yet officials are keen to get her to Rio, how is this right?
We have been trying everywhere to get her sponsorship however local companies will not support as she is not from a local charity and larger companies have already set their sponsirship plans for the next year.
My questions is how do BD officials expect her to be able to represent the country if they are not willing to fund for her training etc because she is too old??
