A good few years ago, a friend of mine had a cross country accident which has lead to her living with a neurological disorder which effects movement in all four of her limbs. Before her accident she contested county level showing and riding club cross country however now she is a dressage convert.

Since January she has been riding for Para Dressage teams and has excelled beyond belief, considering she couldnt stand dressage, she has exceeded all expectations and made the most of her unfortunate circumstance. On the 1st-2nd June she was competing at the British Para Dressage Home International Championships as part of a team competition whereby she claimed the highest score of the weekend at 72.14%!

She has now unfortunately at the stage where she may no longer be able to compete at this level due to the lack of financial support. There has been discussions about her reaching the Olympics in Rio yet she is 'too old for funding' She is 32, unable to work due to her disability yet officials are keen to get her to Rio, how is this right?

We have been trying everywhere to get her sponsorship however local companies will not support as she is not from a local charity and larger companies have already set their sponsirship plans for the next year.

My questions is how do BD officials expect her to be able to represent the country if they are not willing to fund for her training etc because she is too old??

This may sound harsh but she is in the same situation as thousands of other athletes. She is too early on the path yet to apply for lottery funding. My friend is an Olympic fencer and basically self funded to get to the Olympics as well as working. There are thousands of aspiring athletes and much of the focus is on youth as a bigger pyramid at the base and other social benefits etc.
Unless you are in the system there is pretty much no support.

I'm glad you posted this as my initial thought was that it was a shame that the lady had no funding. Then considered it a little more and thought, isn't that the same for everyone, para or not? I don't know enough about how athletes are funded, so I didn't comment before.

Is she involved with her nearest big RDA group? (and I mean big as in one who could offer her something at the level she rides at). It might open up a couple of doors in terms of attracting some funding...

That said, sponsorship and support for Para-dressage is overstretched as it is
