So, slightly personal question perhaps, but when you have bought a horse in the past, where have you got the money from to pay the purchase price?

Whilst it is still going to be next year at least that I'll be able to afford the 'running' costs of another one, it would be about another 5 years before I could afford the outlay. My parents bought my horsey for me when I was younger but it wasn't very much and I paid back over a period of time for a little bit of his price at which point they gifted him to me.
If you take a bank loan out, obviously you have to factor funds to allow for repayments, and if anything happens to the horse you still have to pay it back, but are there any other disadvantages?
How have you paid for your neddies?

most recent ones i have bought and sold other horses and then bought 'my' horses with the profits- did the same to get my deposit for my house too!

I moved my other half into my house.....cut my petrol bill and him paying me rent therefore cutting down the size of my mortgage a bit helped me save up for my new horse ;-) Although paddy wasnt hugely expensive!

Dad bought my first one for me, the 2nd I paid off out of wages in monthly installments and rest didn't require money lol :)

My OH is waiting to hear back about a loan (to buy me a horse!), if that faisl I will have to quite smoking and save the money!

I just worked out how much I could save just by stopping smoking for 2 years...£4526!!!!!

my girlie was £450 which was less that 2 weeks wages... hee hee! Im cr*p at saving so I had to go for the cheap option! To buy a horse more suitable, I will sell her for a around £2500 after a summer of fun competing and sponsored rides etc.... fingers crossed :D

I have a job i dont really like but pays well to afford the horses - i saved all the extra money i didnt need every month for 2 years to buy one of mine - the others have all been fairly cheap though.

All the bonuses I have ever received from work went on pets... the first (very small one) went on a dog, then came yet another very pricey dog... when I got a larger sum, it went on a horse. OH sometimes wondered whether I should be banned from having bonuses - which I didn't for the past two years... :(

first one was a gift from my then OH but kept horse (not OH) till he died some 20 years later! Played around with money on a credit card for next horse and bought and sold on till I could afford what I wanted. Have had to save and top up at various times but current pony was paid for by the sale of previous one.

When I do buy my next horse (which will be when I can afford to run a second) I will save for it, I will be looking for a bargain at auction potentially, more than likely a youngster, I would not be looking to pay more than a few hundred. If I did buy a older fully broken then I would still be looking for under £1.5-£2k

I got Saffy on loan from World Horse Welfare for £200. They quite often have nice horses for lon and although WHW still own her I can keep her forever and do whatever I want with her. She is 7 years old 14.3hh and I have had her since August last year, one of the best horses I have had. They rescued her at 18 months old and she had been starved.
