Hiya everyone, Hope your all having a good day and your horses are ok.

I have a strange question, when I went to my boy last night he wouldn't eat all his tea (hes a cob!! and loves his food) then he started to gag, like he wanted to be sick! I know horses cann't be sick but thats what it looked like.

He did it for about half an hour and had his head about 2" of floor. He followed me around stable and was pawing at the floor, didn't want water and was tring to pull his own bed down.

Has anyone seen this sort of gaging before??

Thanks for any info or advice XxX

Sounds like he might need a vet, my little mare did this and had to have the vet out to her, She now has the breathe easy in her tea which keeps her airways open.

I would really get a vet to check him out. hope he is ok.

No I don't wet it as he slobbers like theres no tomorrow when he eats. I was lucky as mother in laws friend was coming round for tea who is a vet!!

But as they do he stopped doing it about 10 mins before vet came round!!! He still looked at him and all was ok temp everything but he still didn't want he hay or tea.

Could just be me wrapping him up in cotton wool or it could be him choking, I'll try wetting his tea tonight and see if that helps.

It definately sounds like choke.

I soake my horses feed for around 20 mins before feeding it because he's prone to choke. And then add more water again, so that it is wet.

Another one here that thinks it was choke. Poor thing

How is he today?

He is fine this morning, I've seen them coke by coughing but never gaging. I think I rang eveyone horsey in my phone to see what they thought!! No one said coke as they all said he would be coughing.

I even did a video of him doing it as I knew he would stop when a vet turned up.

Choke just means they have some food stuck in their throat, they don't necessarily cough. They may stretch their necks out, curl their top lip, and generally just look uncomfortable.

If it happens again I would take all his feed away and gently rub the underside of his neck - rub down though. I also wiggle Charlie's neck a bit just to try and dislodge the food/work it down his neck.

Some people also say that if you lunge the horse or pour some oil down their throat it should help, never tried that though.

Sounds like choke to me, don't ever discount this kind of behaviour, they can actually die from choke. Wet food wont ever do him any harm, so wet it down nicely every time.

its sounds like choke to me,horses dont have gag reflex like we do !!

choke can also be teeth related if he hasnt been done lately get them checked to be on the safe side
