I love dogs.
I have owned dogs.
I don't have the time to devote to having a dog/dogs in my life right now, so I just make do with loving everyone else's :)

BUT. I'm really disappointed that over the last few days on my rides through the forest, all I've seen is churned up dog-poo bags.

The forestry commission have just done their usual spring job of mowing the sides of the tracks ready for the next season's growth. It is THE most beautiful spot. Hundreds of acres of woodland and tracks, open to everyone, mud-free and just gorgeous.

I must've counted 20 or more on a half hour hack this morning. Are the bags biodegradable themselves or are they just going to preserve the poop? I've also seen far too many hung in tree branches.

And what in Heaven's Name makes people take a poo bag with them, scoop up the poo and then ... HIDE IT IN THE UNDERGROWTH OR A TREE!!??

End of rant and apologies to all those who DO pick up the poop bags.

I have no problem picking up poo but it drives me mad when there is then not a bin for miles to put it into. Not that I would dispose of it as you have said above but maybe that is why so many people do it - I guess being cleared up and chucked into the over growth is better than it being left on the path!

bags being chucked into the undergrowth is no good for anyone. If there aren’t any bins you carry it or just tie it onto your lead. Many a time I take poo bags home to put in my own bin - i just loop them round the tow bar! It makes me livid to find poobags along our fences and drystone walls. Take it home with you :(

This is something I cannot get my head around. I simply don't understand the mentality of those who will go to the expense of buying the bags and the effort of putting the poo in the bag - only to chuck it by the wayside, or worse, tie the thing to a tree branch. Seriously, WHY?? There was one such offender where I used to live, regularly I would see filled poo bags only a matter of yards away from a dog poo bin. Lazy and inconsiderate towards those who then have to clear it up.

[scrambles off soapbox]

It's often better to flick poo into the undergrowth with a stick, unless of course it's public access land rather than a footpath, far better than preserving it in a bag. Better still to take it away and dispose properly though.

Our local forestry places specifically ask people to flick with a stick rather than bagging and binning. We occasionally bag and leave if doing a linear walk but always pick it up on the way back - haven't lost one yet!

i know someone who bags and leaves to collect enroute back - its really unpleasant to come across these poo bags even if people pick them up later on, its not a nice sight. I was out for a hack at the weekend and there was a poo bag right in the middle of the track - i met the walker on her way back and i know she picked it up but why should i have to ride/walk round it? Ive driven over them in my car by mistake near the end of our driveway too. It drives me mad!!
(also scrambles off soap box)

There's someone round here that leaves a piece of kitchen roll over the top. I can only assume they are elderly and can't bend down but it's pretty minging when it rains.
Training jackets are good for taking poo bags with you as they have massive back pockets. Just don't forget and take a seat lol!!

The Forestry Commission and many conservation people would love to know what goes through those peoples minds when they bag and hang or even chuck it into a tree.

The bag itself will only slow the decomposition rate so the poo hangs around for longer; but also not all bag will biodegrade so all it does it keep it hanging around. As you've found its also a hazard to those working in those areas; clearing back the plant material and getting poo material thrown at higher heights than if it were just on the ground (and then more likely to be walked over then cut through - unless, of course, they are cutting there too).

It's a mystery and an annoying bit of behaviour as just flicking it into the trees would be far better if people don't intend to take it away to dispose of correctly.

It drives me mad too. Just why bother to pick up and bag then leave it. Can't understand people's mentality. If you are not going to bin it it's better not to pick it up at all.

Yes, forestry and similar round here ask you to "stick and flick". I always have a bag with me and though its a pain to carry a full bag (the lancashire heeler is far preferable to the GSDs in this situation :) )I would never dump it.

Our local forest has signs up asking people to either bag and bin (there are bins in the car parks) or stick and flick into the undergrowth. There are still bags of poo hung from branches just at the right height to smack you in the face whilst riding. Maybe people think there is a dog poo fairy who comes along after dark and collects them all up, then hands them in for cash! I would have though flicking into the undergrowth in untrodden areas would be much the best thing to do, surely the poo will break down without the plastic and saves on bin emptying costs.

It drives me mad too. It gives the rest of us (responsible owners) a bad name. I would rather someone flick the poop into the undergrowth with a stick than bag it and leave the bag. Aaargh! - it makes no sense!

Me too - I just pop them under the rear wiper - never use it anyway!! I just cannot understand the whole hanging the bag in the tree thing??? why, just why...many a time on our country walks I just flick his poo into the undergrowth where it can't be trodden in, There was a place in Devon I think that had loads of signs telling people to " take a stick and flick" with a little pic too showing people to just flick it into the bracken and undergrowth!!! what common sense!!

We have a regular offender who bags and ties to a branch, there is a bin not ten paces away. If I catch them I will follow them home and
tie the bag to their door knocker !

Drives me scatty too. I used to keep my horses down a country lane and had a dry stone wall round it. Some idiot decided to poke their full poo bags in the holes in the wall. There were loads at on point, so I pulled them out the wall and put them them in the middle of the lane and surprise surprise no more poo bags in the wall!
