I think we may be having our first visit to the vet, other for vaccinations, in the morning.

Harvey had "pudding stools" Monday night which then turned quite runny and full of bird seed. He was quiet at the time, but as soon as the bird seed came out he returned to normal. We think a crow possibly dropped some of of a fat ball from my in-laws bird table in our yard, only explanation for where he could have gotten bird seed from.

He was normal again toileting by Tuesday morning, no increased frequency and returned to pooping "logs".

This morning he was normal. He then did a slightly softer poop in mid afternoon and a darker brown, very loose poop an hour or so ago. He is absolutely 100% in himself. Drinking alot (thankfully) and has a hearty appetite. No sickeness, gums nice and pink and no discomfort if you "squish" his belly gently...I think the term is palpate.

His skin is the normal loose puppy skin, no signs of dehydration, but as I say he is eating and drinking absolutely 100% normally.

He's fed nothing but James Wellbeloved Puppy food, but I can't guarantee no children (schools shut) haven't dropped bits of food on the floor during the day...biscuits etc. They say they haven't, but I'd be naive to completely rule out the possibility he's been hoovering crumbs up.

If he continues to have loose poops, as in watery loose, in the morning I will call the vet and take him in for a check up as I don't want him to become dehydrated.

Any ideas? Could messing in the snow make him offside? I don't recall Jasper having icky tummies as a pup....iron constitution that one...but is it common for them to occasionally suffer the odd day of diarrhoea?

He is still crying to go out, even though it's loose, so isn't losing the ability (yet) to hold himself until outside. Good boy, that impresses me!

Might have just been the fat content of the bird ball. Think of what would happen to your own bowels if you ate a big lump of fat, especially if you were a baby.

Best to give the vets a ring and double check.

I had chips for tea last night.....does that count?

On a serious note, I'm not concerned enough to call the on call vet tonight as he is perfectly fine in himself. I wouldn't hesitate to do that if I had the slightest feeling of unease about his overall condition though.

Just a loose poop or two. I think it's the windy sound it comes of the bum with that makes me go "eeeeuuuugggh" the most. Thankfully it's not been on the carpet.....YET!

Oh yeah, I know you did.

Just wanted to clarify, for anyone reading (not necessarily you) that I wouldn't hesitate to call my vet if he seemed unwell in himself as I realise diarrhoea can quickly turn serious in small puppies, and be a sign of a more sinister illness.

I'm endeavouring to stay calm, due the knowledge he is 100% normal in himself.

I don't have any natural yoghurt, but I had heard this helps. It's lethal here at the moment -7 with slushy snow having frozen. If I can avoid venturing out in it, when it's dark, I will.

Can always buy some in the morning. There's a village shop/post office next door to the vet.

Someone told me scrambled eggs, cooked thoroughly can help to bind them up. We have free range hens on the farm, but I'm not sure if this is true?

My fear is what disgusting thing has he eaten?! I can't really think what he could've eaten, other than snow. I guess there might be some cow muck stuck on Duncan's wellies in the snow as he walks to the door.

I just hope there's nothing stuck and he's not pooping "overflow". Would he be unwell in himself if this was the case? The moment he starts looking unhappy I would call the vet.

Just saw your last post - we cross posted!

Scrambled egg should do the trick.

Cool. The whole egg or just the yolk? (Not that I mean I'd give him a whole egg...I mean can I give him the white as well in his "scramble"?

Do you do it with a drop of water, in the microwave, so as not to have to add butter to the mix (as you would if you were doing it on the stove)?

Thanks Slinky. It's ring-a-dinging as I type.

He's been hyper all afternoon, only just gone to sleep! Gah!

He has also, might this be the cause, been grinding his teeth over the brickwork on the fireplace. Horrid little creature as the sound has me crawling up my own bum!

Might blunt his hypodermic syringes, masquerading as puppy teeth, a bit. Not sure how I can stop him from doing this as there isn't a fire guard big enough to enclose off the whole fireplace area.

Spaniels, aka Canine Dustbins!

Jasper used to love chicken fried rice. You only had to say, "shall we have a Chinese tonight" and he'd get all excited!

Bless. I miss him so much. Got teary watching Harvey playing in the snow as Jasper would've been in his element today.

He just cried to go out. Did one poop which was runny and then another with a bit more formation to it...this one, on inspection, contained some carpet fibre. With there being a snow day at the High School, I stupidly allowed the older children (15 and 21 as my son is off work today) to watch him whilst I was outside seeing to the horses.

Seems they didn't watch him enough. We've cut all the loose fibres off the carpet join and put a rug over it! Gah...don't know how else to stop him!

Seems he might not have needed the egg after all!

Bloody hell pups are so worrying. I have a pup a few weeks older than Harvey and as I reading your post she was bloody dustbin raiding as my son has been cooking..

It seems he is on the mend keeping eerything crossed x

I know! You need eyes everywhere.

I had cut all of the loose fibres off last night as he was interested in the carpet. No idea how he's managed to find more today. Darned puppy!

My hubby bought me a new bin for my birthday, this was before Harvey arrived. You walk over to it and the bin lid opens autmatically. I'm sure Harvey's going to work that one out pretty quickly when he's big enough! ***rolls eyes***

In regards to the things he wont leave alone, is there anything nasty tasting you can put on them. i have a NAF No Bite spray thats used for horses rugs i think, this is what i use if i find a bit of chewed carpet/wallpaper, it rarely happens here but that stuff nips it in the bud when it does. i know hes only little but there might be something thats taste nasty that will be safe for him.
Im also fairly sire the runny bum will clear up once hes cleaned his system out so to speak, as long as hes staying hydrated i wouldnt worry a whole much. easier said than done i know.

ermmm for stopping chewing I used (dont laugh) tabasco sauce! just a few drops on some kitchen roll and rubbed it into the rug that he insisted on grooming/shredding when we were out!! stopped him
grin.gif

also if Harvey eats snow this will almost guarantee to give him tummy upset a bit (although im sure the carpet fibres and fat ball prob didnt help either!
smile.gif
hehe spaniels!)
Maybe just do the stave for a day, then a day on rice and chicken and then back onto normal food........ just to give him time to get it out of his system.
smile.gif
And no snow eating (or carpet eating!)

and I also have an image now of a poor cow walking round a yard with a spaniel hanging onto its back leg going "yum yum!!"
