i know how to gallop with stirrups but ive always wanted to gallop bareback. any help please? ive only ever done walk, trot and canter bareback. thanks

Well, if you can walk, trot and canter bareback, gallop's a doddle as long as you've got the brakes at the end :D

Have fun!

I find slowing down is the hard part, I hate trotting bareback, walk to canter and canter to walk all the way haha. You should be fine to gallop just relax and stay with him/her. Maybe grab some mane until you feel secure.

When I was much younger we were riding the ponies down to the field and my mount galloped off for the gate. Great fun at that age but not up for it now!!!

if you are able to ride in walk, trot, canter and not lose you balance even if canter to trot tranisiton isn't smooth then you should be ok, just grab a bit of mane when you're slowing down and have your legs long, they help you stay upright and keep your balance nicely. just do make sure you have breaks, nothing worse than to have to fight to stop while being bareback. oh and prepare yourself for a much bouncier trot, as galloping will be exciting so trot will be bouncier :) have fun!
heres me on my exloan horse, although i'm not quite sure if we're properly galloping at that point yet or if it was before full speed.

Love the pic! And yes, you were galloping, as all four feet are off the ground at one time (suspended) and gallop is a 4-time gait, so 1234 - (suspension), 1234, (suspension)...

Canter's only 3-time gait ie 123, 123... 4th leg is on the ground, pushing off for the next stride
