I know this is something that has been done before, but can anyone help me that has had experience with gastric ulcers? I bought my boy in January, we had our problems but we got over them and things started going really well. Unfortunately over the last 4/5 weeks things have taken a turn for the worst. He has got very grumpy, I now have issues brushing him around him belly area, he is naughty to do the girth up and he is just generally lashing out. He kindly booted me twice Wednesday night while I was just trying to pick his feet out. I have read quite a bit about gastric ulcers and think this may well be the issue (will call my vet Monday), but wondered if anyone could share their experiences. My chap is out 24/7, has been for the last 5mths, but there isnt a great deal of grass, he just gets a handful of mollichaff daily so I can give him his supplements (flyfree and biotin). I have started to feed hay out in the field, but despite little grass he looks well weight wise. How much does the scope cost? What are you now feeding? Are you feeding anything to prevent them coming back? Thanks

My horse had gastric ulcers but he was not grumpy at all. He just lost lots of condition and his coat was poor. He had fretted while on box rest and hadn't eaten properly and that triggered the ulcers. The scope is a around £200 I think. My vets thought he had a tumour but in the end ulcers were the cause of his poor condition.

My horse lost huge amount of weight very quickly, his coat was all dull & starey. He was so miserable I couldn't even pat his neck without getting grizzled at & he was very unhappy generally. I guessed ulcers straight away due to huge amounts of surgery, box rest bute etc that had gone on for 7-8 months previously, not sure what triggered them at that point for them to suddenly get so bad. Had 2 scopes, they're not hideously expensive about £300 I think, but the treatment is eyewateringly expensive!

My mare had issues when I first got her - irritability and one bout of colic. I did not have her scoped but my vet is fairly certain it's ulcers from the symptoms and the fact that she was a track horse.

She is kept in a stall and paddock - I gave her gastroguard for 2 weeks (I think) and I feed grass hay 3 times a day as well as beet pulp. For the first year, I also fed 2 ounces of aloe vera juice per day on the advice of an equine nutritionist.

I've had no problems since I began that feeding regimen. Good luck.
