Just wondered if there where any german shepherd owners lovers on here. I am the proud owner of 2 and also volunteer and foster for a german shepherd rescue would be great to hear from others.:)

Ah cas, didn't realise Joey was a gsd. I've got 2, we lost one Xmas 2011 leaving my giant one behind (there is a pic on my page if you want to see) and a few weeks later the one we lost sent us a puppy. It was an accident that we saw the advert at all. When we got there he was the only one left. I wanted a black one originally and he's black and tan, but we liked him and he was from very healthy parents. He's turned out to be an amazing, loving little dog. I'm sure our old lad chose him for us! Rather brilliantly he has taught our big dog to play with toys, which just didn't happen before!

That is a lovely story....

My Joey was a happy GSD, so playful and full of energy, even yesterday with his wobbly legs and collapsing with every step, he wanted to play and brought me his ball when I couldn't stop crying cos the time was coming. My life is pretty empty without him.

Hubby doesn't want another GSD, he says their are too big, because Joey was a "giant" GSD, I loved him with all my heart and wouldn't mind having another one, very loyal playful and lovely breed

Guys if your interested in the breed please come and support us

Big fan of the breed, although I feel that the breed as a whole went in a difficult direction for a time.

Fostered for a while, had two of my own. Currently waiting for the right dog to choose us :)

Another big fan here. I have two.

cas1979 your post has brought tears to my eyes. RIP Joey.

Im just in the process of arranging an MRI scan to see if my boy has CDRM. He is the same build as your Joey. Its breaking my heart seeing his legs starting to go.

I'm another big fan.

We have had three over the last twenty years or so. All ours have been rescued/re-homed by us. Our first came from Battersea Dogs Home. Currently we have a 2 year old dog that we have had for a year. He is a huge character, very expressive face, super friendly and cuddly and great with other dogs. He's not the best guard dog though. In the garden he will bark but in the house he is useless - never barks and lets anyone in

OMG D those pictures of your baby boy made me think of mine, he used to love the woods and the beach....

I didn't need MRI, my vet did xrays and with that he disregarded all other conditions that share the same symptoms, like dysplasia, arthritis, etc.

The condition progressed so quickly that n 2 months he had next to no claws on his back paws.

How old is yours??

Joey was very young, only 8 years and 22 days

Seeing his paws covered in cuts and bruises was breaking my heart bit by bit and everytime he fell on the floor and tried to get up with struggle brought tears to my eyes.

Some of the last walks my hubby went with us, he saw my crying with Joey's falls and told me I needed to start thinking about the inevitable cos both Joey and I were suffering.... This was 1 of the things that made me think it was time and Joey's face 3 days before going to doggy heaven when he tried to get up with so much struggle that I had to help him.

This has been a rollercoaster of emotions, 1 min Im ok and have accepted the facts the next I think he is going to walk thro garden's door asking for his treats he loved and I break down...

I've had four over the years, the last two, back to back from 10 weeks to 12 and thirteen years old, respectively. The last one went March 2012. They had lovely, fun//working lives and mine revolved round them, the horses and working to keep the whole lot of them in the manner in which they deserved. I miss having a GSD so much. I'm oldish now, and don't feel I have the physical/ mental strength to begin another one. Also, I would be into my eighties (if I get that far!!) when the next one would be ending . . .. Don't have family, so we would be a double burden on the State ;)!
After Z went, last year, I was in "right, that's it, no more dogs, heartbreaking business, got the horse/cat/work, no more" mode: a friend asked if I would "just" see if I could "look after this little old whippet x greyhound for a bit cos they are going to have her pts". She and the cat are snoring tunefully on the bed as I type! She is a real delight, very easy, suprisingly trainable, a good little soul and an accomplished thief!
I miss my GSDs and the "safe anywhere, anytime" feeling they gave me. On the other hand, I don't feel anxious every time I see children/dogs not under "parental" control - the GSDs and I suffered over the years from them leaping all over us, getting growled at, and accused of being "dangerous and should be put down/reported"! And yes, that did get suggested for both of us!
Whippet Quick is about ten years old, according to our vet, and he says " every day over ten is a blessing, (?!) with a whippet x, so we will go on enjoying each others' company as long as possible. After that, it will be back to the "no more dogs, that's it etc . . ". Probably.

Beautiful pic of Joey. My eyes fill up reading your posts.

Dexter turned 9 beginning of April. We call him the puppy man because he has not grown up in his head at all!
This makes it harder as he is still his old self but his back legs dont keep up. We are still doing agilty but only tiny jumps now although he will tell you he can do the big ones he used to.

His claws are wearing down on his back paws and Im looking into getting a pair of dog boots for him.

Its funny because some days I think he looks ok and on others he is noticably not as good. My friend has lent me a harness with a handle on it to help lift him if needed. He needs help getting into the car. He is a lump though as he is a big boy of almost 45kgs.

I read your post and makes me think of myself 6 months ago.

I Bought him booties, he went through 5 pairs in 4 months, my suggestion is Amazon, they sell Trixie for £16.06 I made the mistake of buying Ruffwear for £45 before finding these ones.

I changed my Grand Vitara (4x4) cos he couldn't get on it, so bought a car, easier for him to jump in and out. Although last 3 weeks he struggled so much that I could only walk him around the block.

I had a divan for bed and changed it for a lower basic bed, easy for him to get on and off it.

Put rugs and runners all over the home to help him with grip and changed the location of his water and food bowls cos he didn't like going in the kitchen as the tiles made him slide all over the place.

Had to remove the coffee table from the lounge cos he kept hitting it with his bum.

But as Dexter is, Joey was. A puppy that never grew up. Totally right, made it harder to let him go cos he was mentally active and full of energy, just his back legs gave up on him. After dinner wanted to play and would empty the content of his toy box and bring all his toys to our laps, asked for his afternoon walk, played treasure hunting in the morning (after his breakfast I would hide treats all over the house for him to find them) barking at the postman when ringing the door bell or anyone for the matter....

But his little face 1 day when struggling to get back on his paws told me he had enough.
