I'd like to join here please.. im new here, well not new been a member for ages but never posted!

I've gained a bit more than I'd like this year.. im not huge but I've put about a stone on, it generally happens in summer when horses living out and ive no mucking out to do! Lol

Bit of a yo - yo dieter, having struggled in the past with eating disorder, im pretty much recovered now but I do tend to crash diet and lose quick but then gain it all back over a few weeks and then diet again so always up and down. Would like to lose it properly now and try to keep it down.

Don't think my horse has a problem he's 15.2hh and im currently 8st10 and 5'1 so it's more for me than him lol

I'm 5ft2 and around 9stone. I'm not actually riding much just now but I feel really unhealthy with not being at the yard doing things and comfort eating. I need a bit of motivation to get fitter! Usually when I'm fit and healthy I am somewhere between 8-8.5st. I just need a kick up the arse to get me going again!

Blood results reported nothing unusual with thyroid. Appetite still poor so today bought a protein shake mix with a 1000 calorie content per 600ml serving. weighed at 47 kg last week, next Doc appointment on Tues. Will get weighed again and see if this stuff is helping me put on weight and finally have some energy.

Anyone else having any success? Keeping motivated ladies?! ;)

I'm 5'4" and weighed 13st 8lb. I'm doing the 5:2 and I'm on Week 9.

I was doing so well, having lost 4lbs, then I went to Italy for a week and had a week off. Big mistake - I put the whole lot back on, but was super strict the following week and took it off again.

I've only lost 8lb in total, but it's slow and sure, and apart from the Italy week, it's going in the right direction.

I've done WW and SW and lost a couple of stones, but found as soon as I stopped it crept back on again. But this one works for me. If I want crisps or chocolate, or a biscuit or glass of wine, I can have it the next day if I want to, but actually, I don't often bother.

On my "normal days" I'm usually quite good, and try not to reach for bread, crisps, biscuits and chocolate, but it's great knowing I can if I want - on so-called normal diets I craved sweet sugary things all the time, and it was horrible knowing such treats were off the menu.

I do sometimes get a bit down because the weight loss is so slow, but I just remind myself that it didn't go on overnight, and it's not reasonable to expect it to come off overnight either.

My secret weapon is Hartley's jelly - they come in pots and only have 10 calories, so I can still enjoy a pudding on my fast days.

I've just come across this thread and while I think it's great to have support when you need to lose (or gain) weight, many of you sound as though you're a perfectly healthy weight for your height. Be careful, check your BMI.

Only lost 1lb in 2 weeks but ho hum, better off than on! Though it is going to be a long haul at that rate. Think the key might be NOT to go to the pub and drink beer to celebrate every time the Youngster (Eric) behaves like a star in his breaking/backing/lunging sessions - a near daily occurance!!!

I have just weighed myself after being in Rhodes for a week and have put on 0.5kg which I'm pretty happy about as sure it was going to be worse. I am going to do the 5:2 again as it worked ok for me last year. Just as diamonddogs I found it isn't a quick fix but slow and steady. I did my first fast day yesterday whilst travelling and I agree it's funny as falling asleep all I could think about was looking forward to eating today but then today I'm not that bothered. I am going to try and be good on my normal days and eat wholesome foods and try and avoid too much processed food. I have been reading about the harcomb diet and like the thought behind it so whilst I won't follow it strictly I am going to take parts of it for my normal days. The main thing that I am really going to try is to not eat bread as much.

These are good points - many people fail with the 5:2 because they assume that because the term "normal eating" is bandied about you can just go off and eat rubbish on the non-fasting days, which is just not the case. We tend to forget that it was overeating the rubbish that got us overweight/obese in the first place, so we need to eat healthy food and restrict the rubbish to treats, like normal slim people do!

I think the most surprising thing about this regime is that you'd expect to want to eat a horse with a scabby head after a fast day, but it simply doesn't work that way!

A word of warning to anyone just starting out though - you might get severe headaches on your first day, but this is normal apparently, and it is just on the first day - something to do with detoxing.

I'll be honest...diets don't work! Healthy eating does. I don't want to ruin the mood but diets work temporarily and then you gain weight back.
I would suggest instead of things like Slimming world and diets, invest your money in seeing a dietitian once a week. With real knowledge they will be able to help you more than a faddy diet will ever do. Dieting does so much harm to your body because one week you are 2 pounds down, the next, 1 pound up, 3 down, 1 up etc. It just isn't good to put your body through that.
Severe headaches... that's not good. It's not detoxing...it's your body starving. Nourish your body with healthy food and you'll feel so much more energised.

I'm a bit sad - probably did it to take my mind off fasting! I created a spreadsheet at the beginning, which maps my weight loss, measurements (bust, waist, hips, thigh, calf and upper arm), waist-hip ratio and BMI.

Interestingly, the biggest inch loss has been round my waist - around 3 inches in nine weeks!

Although I agree with everything you've said about dieting, an average first world person would not go into starvation mode on the strength of one day of 500 calories (and speaking personally, I've rarely suffered headaches through not eating before). I did a lot of research into this one because it sounded too good to be true, and followed the advice given by Dr Michael Mosley, who uses this regime himself after extensive medical research.

That said, we're all individuals and what works for one won't work for another - its just about finding a regime that suits you, preferably one which doesn't involve deprivation of essential elements of a healthy diet (low-carbs, Slimfast, I'm looking at you!).

I would like to join in please...I am 5'6" and currently 10st 3...not much to come off, but I have started running to get fitter...actually training for a 10k now and actually trying to ride more, as I was a bit easy to say oh I am tired I won't do much when actually it does me good to get on and do something pro-active!
I would like to get to under 10st...just so that my clothes fit a bit better! I just seem to have got stuck at this weight and feel a bit squishy round the edges...hence the fitness coming in to play!
No diets for me, just upped the exercise and trying not to snack during the day...its my worst habit...biscuits are the devil! Plus I sit at a desk all day so easily tempted by people in the office! I am using myFitnessPal to help me track, scales have broken (told me 14st last night, which I can safely say I am not) so will have to have a weigh in at my mums at the weekend!

Hey all! Hope you're all doing well. I am down a further 4lb having had a bad week (alcohol and the delivery of Roses and Quality St to my local supermarket) but luckily my healthy eating plan allows for treats so not been too bad. Mucking out 5 horses and riding is really helping too.

How is everyone doing?

I've been going to slimming world for a month now, I've lost 4lbs and now weigh 11stone 3lbs, my motivation is to ride my daughters pony, I would love to get down to under 11 stone, which I've never been as an adult, then I think I would love to get down to 10.5ish. Its great to find people with the same motivation, I know we can do it, its just sticking to it. Maybe this thread will eb a massive help to us all! Good luck guys and keep us updated : )

Another 4lbs off for me this week :) One more pound to reach one and a half stone off! I'm doing my first ever fun ride on Sunday and I'm sure my old boy will appreciate it (he dumped me at the weekend so he's obviously happy with the lighter version of me!)

Yes sounds good to me. At five foot ten and weighing 15stone and five pounds I am well over weight and classed as obese on the BMI scale.

I am lucky as I don't appear to be that fat, its just that I am tall! But watching videos of me riding in my 'whites' at a show and my legs look huge!

I started jogging and as a result got plantar fasciitis and have had this for over 15 months now although its starting to recede a little and it is a self limiting condition.

I took up roller skating again after a 30 year gap and I skate seven days a week (or was until recently whilst out of work) but now limit it to weekends. My sick cover temp contract ends next Tuesday so I will be able to skate again every day until I get another contract.

We have a special skate area at our local park in the figure of a very large figure of eight with smooth paths and its uphill so its good as it gets the glutinous maximus muscles working! But its great for coming down the hills - wicked exhilarating and great fun.

And what's more I've not received one negative comment about skating even though I am 44. Most people are fascinated when they see me skating through the park and ask me where I got my skates from and say they want to take it up too!

The headaches are more likely to be sugar/caffeine withdrawal than starvation mode. We all tend to eat too much sugar these days and our bodies become used to it. I read a fascinating article in the Telegraph about somebody who went fully sugar free. She suffered significant withdrawal symptons for a week or so before things ironed out and the body adjusted.

Having said that I would never give up sugar entirely. Everything in moderation. I love chocolate too much!

The absolute key to weight loss IMO is exercise. It enables you to eat a normal diet but still lose weight. Think about what we make our horses do and get yourself moving!

Ooh just found this thread! I'm in!!!

Very motivating. I'm 5' 6" and in my 20's I was about 10st which is good for me as anything less I just look too skinny and I have a phobia of bones!!!! I don't like to feel my own bones. It's like someone scraping nails on a blackboard for me. Weird I know.

So anyway, I have a youngster to start riding and my goal is roughly 10st or thereabouts. She is 15.2 and about 450kg and going by the 15% rule for a youngster I should be 67kg or 10st 7lbs. I want to be 10st though.

After the baby last year I was 14st!!! By April this year I was about 12st. I started walking lots and eating less as I already eat healthily. My major problem was portion control, sugar and beer. So, I started the 5:2 diet and continued with exercise, nothing too strenous... walking, cycling etc.

I did experience withdrawal symptoms like headaches and fatigue but after a while these disappeared. Three weeks ago I got down to 11st 7lbs and sort of yo-yo'd between there and that 11st hurdle! I was annoyed but not discouraged. I cut out sugar in all drinks, no cake or biscuits or jam on toast and carried on. Also, no beer or any form of alcohol. Anyway, this morning I weighed myself and finally.... I am over the 11st hurdle yay! I'm (69kg) 10st 12lbs.... still some way to go yet but being strict the last month or so has paid off massively.

I'm not starving myself but I have changed my attitude to food and I can't say I feel hungry and miserable. Quite the opposite actually, I feel fine and normal. I have to accept now that at this age (34) I probably need to be sensible and not eat three huge meals a day like I used to.

I've joined Sober October now too and so far so good...

I've managed to lose 3lbs in three weeks and actually keep them off :) Not been doing anything special except keeping away from cakes and biscuits on weekdays. Hope everyone is getting on OK.
