I am lucky enough to be going on 4 days but I never use the train do was hoping somewhat could help . Is there a pass you can buy daily so you don't have to book specific train times ? And would I have to book tickets individually for each day ? I looked at the week pass and that was going to cost alot more than buying daily tickets . Also how long will it take to get from Paddington to Greenwich ?

Each ticket includes a travelcard across London so you'll be able to use all the public transport for each day that you're visiting. Paddington to Greenwich takes about 40 mins whatever way you do it on a good day :)

I'm trying to work out the train tickets for train services into London using this website: http://www.nationalrailgamestravel.co.uk/

Depending where you're coming from, Waterloo might be a better option if you have the choice. Easy access to Jubilee line at Waterloo East and also good access to river boat if that is preferable.

Wow, it never takes me less than an hour to get across to Paddington. OP, I live in Greenwich. Where are you coming from?

That was my sole experience of it on a good day though so who knows? :D

Don't forget OP you'll have to leave time for the security checks once you arrive :)

Stupid question and I'm sure I could find out pretty easily, but access for the sj etc arenas, will that be close enough to jubilee line station (north Greenwich I guess?) to walk? I'm hoping to use my normal train pass to get me as far as marylebone then just jubilee line all the way across!!

Have a look on tfl - that will tell you time it takes on the DLR but given the 02 is not that close to Greenwich (when stood on the riverbank, it's not exactly up close to look at), I guess it depends on how much of a walk you want?

Yeah that's what I thought :( north greenwich station isn't really anywhere near Greenwich is it?! Happy to walk for a while rather than change trains etc though! Will have a look nearer the time :)

Its too far to walk. I suggest you get a 129 bus along. Or on the jubilee line you can transfer at canary wharf to get a DLR to Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich which is the nearest DLR station.
Or National Rail your best bet is to aim for Greenwich station (also a DLR stop) but I'm guessing that will be mega busy so another option would be maze hill, which is about 5 minutes away walking.

Another option is getting the ferry from London Bridge. There are direct services to Greenwich.

I'll be arriving at Kings Cross and plan to walk to London Bridge. Suspect it will be just as quick and more comfortable. Try www.walkit.com

KX to london bridge is a bit of a walk ...

OP you didnt say where you are coming in from, that makes a big difference on the best way to go.

i'm getting train to Waterloo then river bus to Greenwich. I know my olympic ticket includes a travelcard but I hate the tube and it will be mental throughout the Olympics so opted to pay a bit extra for the river boat. (£4 so hardly bank breaking!)

Its been a while since I got the boat but I think you get a discount with a travelcard? You do with oystercards anyway.

You do get a discount but not on the express service that they're running.

I'm thinking of using the river too Star :)

Thanks for all your replies I am coming from chippenham in wilts so will have a look if train goes to Waterloo as that seems the easiest option

You're pretty tied to First Great Western from there, but I'd look into changing at Reading and getting onto one of the other lines from there rather than schlep from Paddington across.

I'm getting a coach from Wincanton (Somerset) straight to Hammersmith, then using a method of transport called 'My Brother' to get to his house for the Sunday night. Monday morning, planning on using the tube/DLR.. my theory is, if we get issued with travel cards, then to use them!! Luckily XC day isn't a timed session as such so IF we are delayed by ''the thousands'' on the tube, we still get to see what is what and where! Mind you, if our journey to Greenwich takes us 4 hours, something has gone seriously wrong! I'll be havin' words with that Lord Coe about this transport milarky if it goes tits up for my turn!

The river boat does sound like a nice 'quiet' option though! ;)

From paddington my preferred route to Greenwich is bakerloo line to baker street, change to jubilee line there (as the change is just across the platform) then get on mainland train from London Bridge to Greenwich. That should be the quickest way of doing it - on a normal day it'll take 40ish mins although it depends on how long you need to wait for a train to Greenwich - they should be every 10mins early morning.

Mind you if you get into Waterloo, you may be lucky enough to get a direct train to Greenwich from Waterloo East (a v short walk away) but they tend to run every 30 mins so you might have to wait.

Alternatively you could get any train to London Bridge from Waterloo East and again change to get a Greenwich train.

Hope that makes sense!

Its actually under 3 miles, so about an hour for those of us use to walking energetic dogs. Seen some travel time projections for the underground. They are predicting waits of up to 30 minutes to board a tube at KX, and I guess once on its going to be sardines time.
I lived in London for a few years and remember too many journeys with my face in a stranger's armpit. Eeeew

mtj - an hour sounds about right, it was just the way it was written I had visions of you thinking it was 20 minutes or so !

Cutty Sark is very handy for Greenwich Park (and a very clean, modern line so nice to travel on), but apparently it doesn't have the capacity for the Olympic crowds so will be shut :( Looks like Greenwich is the only option, which is further away. We did get the river boat back from the test event, and it is fun, but seems to take forever....
Can't do too much walking as hubby isn't in the best of health so will have to find a way!

Can somone tell me if this plan sounds right/do-able?

I was thinking of going into Paddington, and then getting on the circle line around to Westminster, and then catching the river boat around the greenwich - what do you reckon?

(Thanks in advance!)

It certainly sounds do-able, every time I put it into journey planner though, it tells me it'll take you about 15-20 minutes to get to paddington and then an hour to get through to the pier at Greenwich.

Its a 10 minute walk along to the museum. I don't know how well you know the area or how well your OH can walk, but yes that will be your nearest option.

I got XC day tickets yesterday (YEAY!!!) and looked at the river shuttles, but
all the useful time slots are full (i.e. any before 11am)... We're staying with OH's Mum in Kent now and getting the park and ride from Thurrock - I didn't fancy the underground either!
