Hi- we've been discussing the DDA & Breed specific legislation on the staffy owners forums. The media has been whipped into a frenzy and have labeled our dogs "devil dogs" and are calling for a beefed up version, perhaps copying the German DDA. This is where we have a common cause- almost all dogs under the German system are 'restricted', which will include your Foxhounds and your family pets.
My staffy will be a cat-1 restricted- must be neutered, muzzled and leashed when outside the house. You probably realise that is not a good way to socialise a dog- it actually makes the problem worse.
Foxhounds would be a cat-3 (over 15 inches high or over 20kg), if they fail a temperament test, or show aggression-no matter what the circumstances they would be upgraded to cat2- that means muzzles.
Depending on your own private pets depends on what restrictions they would be under. Defending you or your home is not an excuse it seems.
This won't just affect Rottweiler and Staffy owners, it'll affect us all (I also have a collie).
BSL has been proven time and time again it does not work- google "winnipeg BSL" for bite statistics before and after BSL- the bites went up. It's also worth mentioning that Canada never had a fatal Pit Bull attack until after the legislation came in (ten years after) and that was an alleged Pit x Labrador killing it's adult owner.
BSL is just a lazy way of dealing with the problem of unfit owners, please support us by emailing your MP not to support BSL.
ditto that. i am also a mother of 4, and own 2 great danes. training/socialization is on going and for life, my young kids are never left alone with the dogs. my kids are also taught to have huge respect for ours/others dogs/animals.
The grandmother seems to have been with the child. Not picking on a breed at all.... What makes one human being capable of murder and another not? All sort of factors go into the make up of a human, canine, equine personality. In the U.S.A in many states the penalty for taking a human life is death. Many dogs will snap if pushed, this dog was so aggresive it actually killed a child and seriously injured an adult. How can anyone not agree the best course of action was to have the dog PTS? The hysteria this attack has created about is dogs unnecessary, The great british press has scented a story with legs and will run with it until it doesn't sell as many papers.

I dont. The ONLY course of action for this dog was PTS.My point was that the dog was not born bad but made that way.
Saw on the news today that said dog was owned by a drug dealer....says it all really.

Cant agree more with that.As soon as something more "interisting" comes up this will all be forgotten.
