Finally accepted the fact Roo does not fit into the girth we bought him as a 4 year old any more :( its a 50 inch and I can just about do it up, but it is a struggle to get buckles to meet girth straps initially which is not improving his demeanor about being girthed up!!

However they don't appear to make this girth any more - it is a professionals choice one with removable sheepskin lining, and a ring at the bottom to clip breastplate etc too, elastic both ends.

He has always been a tiny bit girthy sometimes, not too bad but noticeably better with sheepskin lined girths although also fine with my lovely dressage girth which is contoured and lined with soft leather, so that's an alternative to sheepskin I think.

Needs to have a d ring in the middle as my breastplate has clip fastening. And elastic both ends or flexible throughout, no one ended elastic.

So any recommendations? Needs to come in a 54. Probably normal rather than stud girth ATM as ride him in stud girth so rarely that his current one will just about stretch!

I ride a horse who has a similar Rideaway version with both linings. He wore the sheepskin all winter and now has the neoprene, I can't say I notice a difference. He is, however, much more comfortable than he was in his previous girth, no question.

Lol sorry IHW it's been snatched up already - Sam has it!
That's interesting that rideaway do one though thanks TS, off to have a look now! Might allow a better budget for a smart stud girth too :)

Everything I bought the mare is tight now - in three months she has gone from malnourished whippet to pregnant hippo and on to a diet! I do however refuse to buy new girths so we just struggle ;)

Hmm, I was sure it was a Rideaway product but perhaps not anymore!

Anyway, the one I'm talking about is one of these from this store:

Edited for a doh moment . . .it's a Bridleway product: http://bridleway-equestrian.com/item64.htm

As I said, it's cheap and cheerful BUT I'd say it's good for the price and much sturdier than similarly priced options. Not real sheepskin, of course, although if you were really dedicated you could probably get someone to make you a liner.

Ah bridleway! Cool thanks TS, will weigh up options. I'm always one for a bargain tho and the pro choice version has suited him well.
Jane Lou I have been struggling with this girth for about 6 months - as an idea he has gone from between M/MW for saddle fit to rapidly approaching W in about 4 months.... He seems to thankfully have stopped growing up and is dedicating all that energy to growing out - his topLine has totally changed!

I'm a bit of a fiend for girths, both material and how they're fitted. I see so many people cranking up uncomfortable girths on their horse then wondering why it's trying to eat them! I'm fairly keen on the one above for the price because it's a thick material so doesn't wrinkle at the edges like so many synthetic girths, and the elastic is fairly thick and doesn't stretch out almost immediately. Another option is the wintec ones that have elastic all the way through, rather than at the ends.

Funny you say about the horse growing . . . I see that a lot. It's right up there with kids who don't drop their stirrups as they grow and end up riding like jockeys then, when you point it out, they say "But I've always ridden on X hole!" :D

You can get a girth loop from zilco or performance equestrian if you find a nice girth that doesn't have a ring to attach your breastplate too, don't know if that would help widen the choice?

Lol yes he is definitely at that stage, filling out at a rate of knots. And def grumpier about that girth ATM than he ever has been, but it can't be comfortable when I struggle to get the buckle to meet the strap!
What do you think to the kentaur one jane_lou has linked to above?

Very smart looking isn't it. Have emailed to see it they do heffalump size, if not then will most likely go with the bridleways one.
Incidentally further to PM the other night, physio been, 100% sound behind at all times and fine on straight line, and on right circle, some tension in right foreleg when on left circle, she thought likely to be originating behind shoulder so had treatment and now crossing fingers that's all it was!
