we were at the scottish champs today at Glenagles and after we had finished saw a very distressed rider leaving the course. We heard later her poor horse had broken a leg coming down a drop and had to be PTS? Does anyone know if this is true?

I am so sorry for the poor lady, whoever she was and her poor poor horse....

We were there too and as far as I know it is true, a girl I was with said that the guy that had to go move the horse confirmed it to her.

I was just coming back having finished when I saw the rider very distressed and someone else was carrying the saddle and bridle

My heart goes out to them, I cannot begin to imagin how heartbreaking it must be to go to a competition and have that happen and come home with an empty lorry.

Why do the fences have to be sooo hard???? I don't see the point in risking a horse's life!

It's more likely to be a tragic ACCIDENT.
Poor horse, and poor rider.

A friend of ours came out one morning to find her horse had broken its shoulder overnight in the field. These things happen, it is hardly the fault of anyone.

sea view you must have been there at same time as us as I saw her walking back as well....

how awful, just devastating!! it wasnt a hard fence at all, just a wee step down....

I was literally walking through the gate back towards the warm up as she came through the gate towards the lorry park - so sad

Noone is fuly sure of what happened but that seems to be what has been said so far.

There's a risk attached to jumping any obstacle on a horse, be it a fixed obstacle or poles.

A small amount of research would give you an awful lot of information about safety measures in xc.

Back to the OP, how awful for all concerned

my daughter did 2'6 course this morning and having walked the course it didn't seem huge or technical and the drops were literally a small step down. RIP

I remember years ago this happeneing to someone at a RC XC I was at. Poor girl held her horse til the vet came and PTS. We were all only kids.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against cross country as I do a bit myself but when I see the really big complicated ones, it makes me shiver!

It was a freak accident on a 75cm course, nothing big or complicated.
