I was surprised when I was offered a loan. She was suggested to me because I contacted someone in the gypsy cob world who asked around for me.I am not going on my own.She looks nice on the photos and is said to be very quiet. We will see.Instructor very experienced and we both believe strongly in self preservation.I may not buy her.If I do it will only be after a vetting and pregnancy test.

Will they allow a pregnancy test/vet on their site? I know I don’t need to tell you, but be incredibly careful, tell someone where you’re going. I’ll probably be jumped on for this, but take everything that’s said with a big pinch of salt. I’m extremely surprised that they’re allowing a loan.
Getting will be done on livery hard by my get it we get that far.

Good luck! My superstar 4 yr old was purchased from a photo from “the worst (slang word for traveller) dealer in the region” as I found out months later - he had a few issues and a really weird blood panel but we sorted and he is just fabulous - might not have been a smart yard but he has clearly always been handled with love and taught respect - more so than others I have seen from more conventional routes.

Thinking further on this, I would look at this as a project to Re break as appropriate - if the temperament & type of horse is correct along with decent confirmation then you can bring her in to be whatever you want her to be - that background wouldn’t have a tack room of saddles (let’s not go there) and so not really surprised they would need to borrow one to ride plus a lot are ridden bareback anyway

Judging from the photos and in the opinion of the lady J who breeds Gypsy cobs, her confirmation is good and all she needs is a good scrub.I think her riding experience is very basic but that's fine so long as she is quiet and obliging. We are going to view.If we are not happy we won't buy..I agree about the tack room of saddles!! (Smile). She is broken to drive.

Do you need to ride her? You can tell a lot from doing some stuff in hand, seeing her reaction getting saddled, and checking her back.

Ime a horses broken to drive first have harder mouths than your usual green horse, and it’s tricky to get a canter out of them, but otherwise are decent little projects.

It depends, as ever, on who did the breaking to drive.I have done a VERY small amount of driving. The horses were broken to ride first and in my,admittedly very limited experience, their mouths were treated with respect.John Wilmot always got them used to voice commands before putting a driving bit in and he always remouthed them too.Getting the canter sounds depressing but I do have an endlessly patient and correct instructor who will help me a lot with schooling.Would rather try and cope with lack of canter than a horse pushing off with me.

As well as the other tests you are planning to do, please ask your vets to actually run the bloods they take to check for drugs - that is if she is available for that testing close enough to your viewing of her.??

She's on trial for a month. It's an expensive panel test and the obvious drugs like bute should have stopped working by the end of a month.

It might be a good idea to take bloods on arrival but not to vet until the third or fourth week, though.

I just wanted to say, good luck and have fun, even if that means laughing about the experience afterwards, and not coming home with the pony.

I would just guard against the 'loan' being where you pay for the horse and have a refund if he doesn't suit. That sometimes doesn't work!
Thank you. No suprisingly I either return horse or pay at the end of the month if I want to keep her.He says he is very confident that I will love her. Hope so.Yes, will enjoy the experience even if we return empty handed.

I don't think anyone offers a 4 week trial on a horse they are drugging up, and you're very lucky to get the offer. I've got everything crossed for you that she's a nice girl and you take her and she turns out to be the kind of gem Joe is, who was also broken to drive.

I once went to view a horse for the owner to say 'OH I'd forgotten you were coming, the saddle is in my husband's car, he's gone to work'. She borrowed a saddle from a fellow livery. However as she was driving us to the yard, she answered phonecalls that were obviously from different companies chasing debts (gas, contact lenses, something else). We decided that she had probably already sold the saddle.
Then I went to view a young cob that had only ever been ridden bareback, I arranged to take my own saddle to the next viewing, exxcept that I bought a different cob before then.

The best hacking mare I ever had I bought from a very dodgy driving only background. She was a super star and turned her hairy hooves to almost anything. A bit green riding to start with but soon got the idea without any of the tantrums youngsters can sometimes throw at you. And totally bomb proof on the road due to several years trundling around pulling a gypsy wagon.

My husband drove her and I rode her for many happy happy years. Good luck, just go in with your eyes open and leave your money at home and pay him at the end of the month's trial with two witnesses with a good physical presence about them, if you get my meaning, when you actually hand over the money.
I rode her bareback for the first few weeks until I could get a decent fitted saddle for her, could you manage that perhaps?
