I have never fed my fish so much as a pellet of food, yet they are well grown and healthy...... far more so than the sissy tropical fish I have at home.....

Basically if they dont have bugs, they dont eat..... Its as nature intended.

But I do agree that the trough needs to be one of the large 150gallon + ones, not a silly little bucket size one, and a dustbin will not have a large surface area, so they may suffer oxygen starvation in that!!!

What are your feeling about fish flapping about in a tiny bit of water left in the corner, coz someone turned the trough off???

Yard owner turned the auto water supply to my trough off, and when I checked it the fish were poaching gently in the corner

YO suitably chastised now and promises not to do it again.

Fish survived and horses were ok as there are little natural water springs in the field. None of them rushed up for a drink

But it does show that it can, even with the best intentions, go fins up

Was Piebaldsparkle implicated in this fish frying attempt?
I've never trusted her....

No, sadly it was all down to me.... and the other livery who shares the field.....

Automatic water trough, ages from gate, never runs out etc.....

Teach me to be complacent!!! wasnt upset for horses as they had alternative, but recon the fish had an hour if they were lucky

Hmm would it be wrong to put goldfish in all the wild ponds near our field!? because thats where all our pesky mossies and midges come from!

All our water troughs are on spring water. 3 years ago we had a severely ill mare, looked like some sort of posioning, we thought maybe a plant or something. Had the vet, did every test imaginable, bloods etc, couldn't find anything wrong.apart from the fact she went from show condition to a hat rack in less than 10 days.

I noticed lots of larvae in the troughs. Cleaned all the troughs out and put goldfish in. No larvae and the water is crystal clear. Fish don't get fed at all, plenty for them to eat drops in.

And as for ammonia, think if you don't overfill with fish, there shouldn';t be a problem. Most duck ponds etc that horses have access to on the farm have plenty fish in anyway...so I can't see how a couple of goldfish can cause much of a problem.

We live in the far north of scotland, midges and flies can be a problem here.....we don't pull the fish out in winter and they have survived ok.....and its cold here in winter.

On holiday in Cyprus a few years ago and saw that human drinking water collected in troughs and pools at the backs of village houses had goldfish in....the thinking behind it was then that if there was any contamination the fish would die and so the water not to be used.and the goldfish clean the troughs up.

a bit of useless info.... re the size of fish. they actually grow acorrding to the size of the water they are in, i guess it goes on depth and overall size

Yes, it would be wrong to introduce alien species into a natural habitat - it will upset the balance, and cause problems.
Think of the trouble the grey squirrel has caused...

Yes, but mainly because of their colour though...... they would be easy prey for the herons etc

You could get some baby carp (which goldfish are of course) and put them in there. But it has to be a big pond and if it is there are probably fish in there already.

Update on my goldies...... after last weeks disaster..... there is only one left

i quite agree with genie, cannot see how fish could contaminate water, as after all not only fish live in ponds, frogs and various other water creatures live in my pond, horses dont seem to be suffering, after all they will drink out of any muddy puddle if they get chance, but i can see how they could benefit the water.
