Good Alaskan Malamute breeders?

Having spent the last 4 months thinkig about what breed to get for our second dog- we have come to the conclusion that ultimately we want another Mal-but want one from a breeder that breeds for temperament not showing/racing- although OH would like to run with it/cani-cross(Tassy is getting too old for it TBH)

Anyone know of any we could contact for a chat?

we are looking for a pup to be honest- something we can train ourselves- We adore Tassy but her bad habits are someone elses bad habits and we want something with a clean slate- plus two dogs with issues may not be a good idea. Tassy is 200% better with other dogs now so we need a dog that is also good with others to keep Tassy's confidence. Tassy was a rescue and we WOULD rescue again but ideally want a pup.
 
No worries - but I'm thinking what with them being particularly trendy at the minute, there will be more than a few Mal pups in rescue in the first few months of next year, and young enough to get plenty of basic training done.
(This is my mantra for anyone looking for a pup right now!)
 
I dont get what you mean by not being bred for show/working?

As a working breed ultimately any breeder worth their salt would be wanting any dog they breed to have true working ability and I know I as a owner who has chosen a working breed would not want a diluted down malamute, breeders should also be breeding to a standard that means their pups are ring worthy, to a working dog such as a malamute or husky structure is everything.
I agree temprement is important but to me all three are equal, just because you dont want to do a certian thing does not mean your dog should be substandard

I waited two years for mine spent that two years finding my breeder and persuading them that I was worthy of having one of their pups and what a dog they gave me, excellent working brain, BOB in her very first show which I entered for fun and her temprement is second to none mixes with dogs and bitches, entire and castrated, big and small.

I'm not meaning to come across abrupt or a rant its just something im passionate about, i'd gladly help you find a good breeder, having helped Hevs, Misterjay and MasterBronze to find their pups and pups be I love finding out how they are all getting along

I'm not that knowledgeable about Mal's as I have huskies. However, any good 'breeder' should be looking at all three - ie temperament, working ability (they are working dogs after all) and how they are put together. If any of those are lacking then they shouldn't be bred from. A dog that's not put together well won't have the same working ability as one who is and one with a less than good temperament can cause problems in a pack environment. Only the absolute best examples of any breed should be bred from. Unfortunately, loads of people will breed from pretty much anything.

There is absolutely no reason to not have a good working dog that is put together correctly and has a good temperament. In fact, that's how they SHOULD be!!

I guess we just want temperament to be top of our list- they are big dogs and im small and therefore need to be happy with the dog being safe to handle- its attractiveness/how curly its tail is etc etc is of no interest to me. Obviously its confo is important but its parents competition record will not really be something that sways me tbh.

But all of those things should be taken into consideration otherwise that doesn't equal a good breeder.
 
Any good breeder will combine good confo with good temperament :) as I said, they are not mutually exclusive and you won't get far in the show or working sphere if your dog is trying to take lumps out of the judge!

Showing/working a dog, even just lightly, is a good way to ensure it is a good example of the breed and therefore a suitable breeding animal.

2 years!! blimey Tassy will be too old for us to intigrate a pup if we have to wait 2 years for one! We want her to still have some bounce in her - I'm sure Cyrus does know what she's talking about! I certainly don't! However I am still putting Temp at the top of my list, then comes confo. All I want is a healthy, active male pup with parents who have clean eye scores and good hip and elbow results- what colour and size that pup's parents is doesnt concern me.

If the mum and dad have lovely temps, and are healthy dogs with no confo flaws and the breader doesn't over breed his/her stock and provides a good level of advice and help then thats what i'm looking for- i.e if there are two breeders one who has never raced/shown his/her dogs but they are healthy and well put together I would not rule them out because the breeder next door has 100 ribbons from various crufts classes. If however the mum has one the odd class here and there I see that as a bonus not a criterium. What I don't want is a pup from any old person who decided to breed from their pet bitch either to pay off their mortgage or because the kids wanted puppies... That about sums up our requirements. :)
