I would love to buy my share horse a thermatex but can't justify spending that much. Does anyone know what the best budget makes are? Doesn't have to be dirt cheap, just cheaper than an actual thermatex!

Look for a used one on eBay;)

Seconded, the real deal is the best. I have one that is 24 years old, still in super condition and an absolute god send with wet, hot, cold or anything else horses. You simply cannot beat them for usefulness. They wash well (not hot wash) in a normal machine and come up looking as good as new.

You've just missed the thermatex annual seconds sale! A friend bought loads to sell on. It depends what size and colour you want as to whether she still has them £90-110

There isn't a good thermatex on budget. Even on sale they are £100+. But that said I have a weatherbeta coolex and a Mark Todd coolex which are perfectly decent. They are not thermatexes - I have those too. But they are a very good analogue. For a share horse and on a limited budget - try those.

Sorry - should have added the price. The Weatherbeeta is about £30. I got the Mark Todd one at YHL for £10. I don't know what the RP on those are. It is better than the weatherbeeta one if that helps.

I just bought one of the Le mieux ones in Black Friday sale from Horse health, was about £55, a good budget item - works like the thermatex when I put it on a sweaty giant the other day

I think she is 6'6" EKW but will check.

If she were mine I would buy a genuine thermatex, but since she is a share horse I can't really justify spending that much on a rug as I won't take it with me when I stop sharing! I like the look of the Le Mieux and Premier Equine budget versions - thanks for the suggestions :)

Go to maximaequestrian.co.uk. I just brought a lovely thermatex for £49.99 plus free postage. The lady is called Hayley and could not have been more helpful. Beautiful rug and it is nice and thick and in a few different colours. Don't delay!!

Another vote for the premier equine premtext. I tried both and the premtex does the job 99% as well as the thermatex, i'm just gonna buy them in future

Agree with Yeomans, I've got both Thermatexes and the Maxima version, and they both do exactly the same job. Even secondhand Thermatexes seem to sell for £60 plus! The biggest advantage with Thermatex I can see is that you can choose your exact colours and bindings, but if you just want a rug that wicks then the alternatives are just as good.

I have several Thermatex rugs and rate them highly however I do also have the Maxima version which is also pretty good and a great alternative, it fits well and is generous around the top of the tail (which Thermatex fail at IMHO) so they're great if you have a horse that sits on its freshly washed tail!

I do agree though that the PE Premtex is a luscious luxurious rug!

Don't Thermatex come up large, so you buy a size smaller than usual. My horse takes 6'3" and it is a bit on the long side.

I also think the fastenings are cheap and nasty on what is an expensive rug. But I do like to bring it out every winter.

I've got a few thermatex ex but I really like the comfort zone lapel rug, le mieux do the same thing too. I think they are much smarter, less prone to stretching and cheaper

I've just bought my boy one of these at £53 https://ruggles-horse-rugs.co.uk/product/triple-layer-wickingcooler-rug/
Haven't had to use it after a bath or when hes sweaty yet, but it's nice and thick and they claim the triple layer wicks away moisture very quickly. I've got a couple of turnout rugs from them and am very pleased with the quality so far (although he has destroyed the detachable neck of one of them... think that was his fault, rather than theirs, though!)

I just went down the route of the premtex from premier equine and got the leg wraps too. Lovely fit and work well i can find a fault with either to be honest and they look very smart (i have the navy). I am waiting to try the Lemieux half ones on the hot horse but haven't as yet but they look like they should do the job, not as well but then its only half i don't expect them too.

Thank you for posting the above ^^
I have an awkward one to fit, thermatex was ok'ish, Ruggles fit ok'ish so I tried the maxima one and it fits perfectly with room to spare, never heard of maxima previously so many thanks for passing that one
