Good horsey fiction novels read?

Does anyone remember a book called (I think) Misty of Chincoteague? I remember reading it as a child but can't remember what it was about. I remember enjoying the Flambards series by K M Peyton.

Will have to try some of these.

I've enjoyed:

-training Harry by Meghan Namaste. Has some naughty bits in also

-other people's horses and the head and not the heart by Natalie Keller Reinert

-Ben Osbourne's Danny Rawlins mysteries. Starts with The Hyperion legacy and there are 5 of them. All racing themed.

-ridinglessons and flying changes by Sara Gruen

Also run with your heart and leap at the moon by Steve Wright true stories about his ex race horse.

Also can still read teen horse books

I can remember the name, it had a small coloured pony on the front but can't remember what it was about

I'm the same-I remember the cover, a little chestnut skewbald if I remember correctly, or maybe Palomino Skewbald, but not the story. I seem to remember it was one of a series. Off to google it now.

It's by Marguerite Henry. Her books were a staple of my childhood. Well worth a read although I prefer the beautiful original editions illustrated by Wesley Dennis

Some great suggestions! For anyone who likes mysteries, the American writer Tami Hoag writes to support her dressage habit and has touched on that world in her books a few times, most notably 'Dark Horse'. Obviously she gets the details right!

I recently finished reading Chosen By a Horse by Susan Richards. It was very touching and you could tell it was written by someone who really knows and loves horses. It is sad though - even I had a tear in my eye at the end and I am usually very unsentimental!! I would really reccommend it.

I love Fiona walkers books & jilly cooper too. Another vote for in the pink,I've read it 3 or 4 times & it's just as good everytime!

A Pony in The Luggage by Gunnel Linde (secondhand only) isn't terribly horsey - despite a pony hero - but is UTTERLY charming. Total nap selection for all children from 6 to 9 and grown-ups too.

The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans is a really good read, much better than the film :) There's much more involvement in the horses, especially Pilgrim.

love this book

also to add:
International Velvet
Flying Finish, Under Orders, Silks, Dead Cert - Dick Francis...really well written thrillers
Stalking Horse, Lifeline, Final Breath, Cover Up - John Francome ..again these are brilliant if you love thrillers or not
Mary King's autobiograph
William Fox-Pitt's AB
Mark Todd
Pippa Funnel

:)

Horse people by Michael Forda
I generally don't like to read fiction about horses ( traumatised by black beauty as a child ) but I loved this book ,not fiction , a horse lovers story .

Loved this!

I have a fairly large collection of horse books but im moving house so they are all packed up!

Off the top of my head, these are really good:
(sorry if any of these have been recommended already!)

Chosen by a Horse - Susan Richards
Half Broke Horses - Jeannette Walls
The Hearts of Horses - Molly Gloss
Blue Horse Dreaming - Melanie Wallace

For some light easy reading, The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley will always remain my favorite :)

Looking through these, I think my kindle is going to be packed! The only other one I can rccomend (if it hasn't been already) is "Horse Play" not all about horses but it has horses, romance and raunch so pretty entertaining :)

If you like a bit of fantasy you could try Mercedes Lackey, she suites a lovely series of books about people with special abilities who arechosen to protect there land by white horses. They talk mind to mind. The one to start with is the arrows of the queen trilogy . They are a easy read and I adore them.

Another recommendation for "Horse Heaven" by Jane Smiley, a very well written, entertaining and fascinating novel set in the horse racing industry in America.

Who wrote those books about the lassie with the chestnut Arab mare in the Scottish Highlands? The horse's name was Shantih and the girl was called Jenny. They were fantastic books. When I was 12. I don't know how well they would hold up to my 31-year old self. Yikes!!

Patricia Leitch! Was reading one of hers the other day (another with a collection of books) and still enjoyed it. Really enjoyed Led by the Grey - Peter de Cosemo

Another Jeremy James fan here, as you're looking for fiction try The Byerley Turk, fictionalised from some records. The Marguerite Henry books are Misty of Chincoteague, Stormy Mistys Foal and Sea Star - I bought them from eBay after the last fiction thread on here!
