Good lord....give me strength

[ QUOTE ]
I am 100% sure that I could give my 6 year old a bridle and a pelham and he would know which way round it fits, just LOOK at the bit, it has a curb chain and there is only one place for that to lie, and what about the curb hooks - surely the fact that they are upside down should have told you something?

[/ QUOTE ]

I actually have an eight year old who can most certainly put a pelham on correctly, though to her credit she does keep trying to ride the loopy little thing in a snaffle, but for some reason buried in his past, he is attached to his jointed pelham.

I've just read this entire thread and concluded that if you put a picture of yourself up saying 'how do I look' when you are dressed from head to toe in fuschia, with your bit upside down, you should expect to be pulled to pieces. In fact, I can't think of a circumstance personally when asking 'how do I look' *hasn't* been a mistake! It's probably best not to compound the problem by claiming many years of experience.
Had I been Sophie my defence would have been not that the friend had fitted the bit, but that the picture was the friend, the horse was the friend's, the bit was the friend's, and she had stolen my identity while I was out having my chainsaw sharpened.

FFS i made i silly mistake and a handful of people on here just blow it out of proportion! he wasnt fussing whilst it was upside down and i know if it was bothering him he would have let me know!

TBH OC for once I am going to be childish and say "whatever". Read my post again, I said NO ONE is above learning, but it is a pro active thing, you have to want to learn, become a sponge, take on everything you see, read, absorb and become better. The OP has taken on board what I said, and hopefully she may just now decide that books are not all that boring

yes because we i have taken the martingale off and he's fussy with his head now, i said i wish i never put him in a martingale as were starting all over without it now,

[/ QUOTE ]

The martingale should not have caused a complete non connection like that - was it running or standing? What is happening there is usually seen when draw reins have been used incorrectly and when they come off the horse does not know what to do with his head. If I were you I would pop him in a loose ring french link and start working from your leg and seat and try to get him to work forwards towards a contact. If he continues to work as depicted in the pics he will end up with back probs 100% guarenteed as he is very tense in many areas - good luck with him, for what it is worth I think he is a sweet boy.

thanks for the nice comment but the original post said im trying him in something different to a snaffle for when i need more control, i wont be hacking/schooling/jumping in a pellum,

I'm sorry; when I first read this post I was of the opinion that we all make mistakes, we are all allowed to make mistakes and it is learning from those mistakes that makes us better at what we do.

However! THIS IS NO EXCUSE FOR IGNORANCE!! I would NEVER use anything on my horse without thoroughly understanding what is does, how it works and deciding whether it is appropriate for my horse - I wouldn't even alter something because my instructor has suggested it unless I can fully appreciate why first and even then I will go away and read up about it - learning is limitless!

I personally find your excuses of "I'm blond", "I don't read books" etc appauling and I am quite speechless by this attitude - I have a 13 year old sister, with 5 years experience who is dyslexic (so finds reading very hard) and blonde (so can be very ditsy) but I know just how much she cares for the horses she looks after as she wouldn't even entertain the idea of doing what you have done and then condoning it with the excuses you have used - she, like me would go away, read a book, ask for advice on here and then speak to me, one of our instructors or an experienced horsey friend before making an educated decision on what to do next.

Like I say, we all make mistakes and they, imo, are a vital step in learning but Im sorry, ignorance and petty excuses really pi55 me off especially when comments were made out of genuine concern

im not ignorant im just getting annoyed at the comments that aren't of genuine concern! some of them are but others aren't, you dont know me, but if you did you'd know im not like some people are trying to say, everything thats been said has slowly been twisted to make me look i dont care and like i have been riding him like this for months its about 40 mins together over the last 2 days, i know i've made a mistake and i will not do it again. he's a happy horse and i dont rush anything i do with him. please can you all stop bitching at me now please!

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes but if you cant get him to work correctly in a snaffle, then you shouldnt progress to other bits, you need to get him working from leg to hand, taking a martingale away wouldnt have the effect seen in those pics.

either he was trying to tell you he was not happy with the bit, or he doesnt know what he is supposed to be doing with himself.

I think he is a LOVELY horse, and he is only 4 but its so important to make sure to only teach him the right things if possible.

I know you love him to pieces and thats probably why everyones comments seem so hurtful, but most people are just tryig to make you see that what you seem to be shrugging off, is important.

Also if your friend has used it for 4 yrs, she surely cant have been using it upside down for 4 years!

Well Sophie that just proves it - you have absolutely NO will to learn! I was offering you free, solid advice there, you should take it! And a just broken horse should be in a snaffle only, the control comes from your riding, not what is in his mouth - and what else will you be doing other than hacking/schooling/jumping? I am not having a go, but you really are not appearing to want to broaden your horizons here!

weezy, out of pure interest if sophie is having probs after having taken a martingale off him with him sticking his head in the air (say, he didnt do this just with an upside down pelham, he did it in a french link snaffle too), would something like a haging cheek be suitable for a youngster, to encourage them to drop the poll but still be gentle?
I'll be honest, i don;t like anything more than a snaffle, but for future reference would be interested to know.

he's been broken in for 10 months, im not using that as an excuse. but im just experimenting, i might not stick to a pellum it might be something else, hopefully booking a lesson with a different instructer next week who specialises in flat work and dressage, wanted one this week but moneys tight as its goingto be daughters bday on tuesday

I'm sorry if I came across as harsh but I was irritated by some of your "excuses". It is perfectly acceptable to say "I made a mistake, I have learn't from it and yes, it was a stupid thing to do". Saying you are blonde etc is completely pointless and yes, those are the sort of comments that will lead to a reaction like mine. I agree that this post has been blown way out of proportion but I also feel that you didn't help matters by your response to some peoples critism.

For the record I do believe that you care - if you didn't then you wouldn't be on here sharing your fun/progress with him - he looks like a lovely type but maybe it may be worth asking an instructor for some advice regarding bitting and also helping you to "connect" him as he is clearly struggling to carry himself without his martingale.

i know i may have responded a bit ignorant to some comments but wouldn't you if you were getting hounded!!!
we have got the last show of the season on sunday so watch this space!!!

No I wouldn't! If I was being "hounded" (which I don't believe you were - you did however provoke some genuinely concerned/angry/irritated comments) I'd be honest, avoid digging myself into a hole and actively show those "hounding" me that I was making an effort to correct my mistake - rather than being even more ignorant than this mistake made in the first place
