Can't believe it is September already - got up this morning and it felt all autumnal and I was feeling a bit miserable about the impending winter which will be here before we know it
frown.gif

So I've been trying to think of good things about winter and so far I've got:

smile.gif
Tucking ponio up in bed on a cold night in a snuggly rug with a deep bed
smile.gif
Losing weight from all the extra chores
smile.gif
Being greeted by a snuggly snoozy ponio early in the morning
smile.gif
Dressing him up in tinsel at Christmas

...and that's as far as I've got!!

So, add your "good things about winter"

Those are all good ones, but not all mine are horsey...

- mulled wine,
- ski holiday
smile.gif

- nice warm fires
- crisp mornings to ride in
- fully clipped and permanently rugged = minimal grooming, brilliant!
grin.gif

- christmas lights, made all the better by the short days

Although don't think I do the losing weight thing, need to get the winter layer of fat on
grin.gif
Lots more I am sure
smile.gif
I can't believe it is sept, heres praying for a late Indian summer

Good things about winter?!!!!

Ehm, aside from the usual "joys" of mud, mud and more mud, too hard to turnout one day and too slippy the next...

The only real good thing is no more plaiting for shows

(oh and hot chocolate in front of the fire when it's p*ssing down outside)

the smell of hayledge

the cosyness of the stables when everyone is in and you are the last to leave and as you switch off the lights all you hear is munch munch munch.

the smell & look of your first brand new shavings bed.

lighting the wood burning stove in the kitchen.

an excuse to buy another hat to keep my ears warm.

No bugs. No mud. Snow. Blue skies, sunshine. No mucking out or poo picking.

Bad things: Reading the hunting reports on here and feeling so jealous I could chew my arm off.

.....
i love the memeries of galloping out hunting on a frosty morning and all you can see is a herd of steam!!(horses)
i love the winter smells and noises!! personal, from our place..
silage/haylage...
tractor going, cows shouting for their morning silage
horses whinneing when they hear the kitchen door open in the morning
birds tweeting in the early hours of a frosty morning
sheep gently bleeting at the sound of the quad bike starting up
dogs play in the yard as you bring the horses in
faces looking in amazment as you open the feed bins
the smell of subtle sweat on the horses tack
dinner cooking in the house at 1.
birds and sheep gently tweeting and bleeting in the late evening.

- As mentioned - no flies or sunburn
- Little or no grooming for the little hairies
- Not getting to hot - I hate getting too hot when I ride, I love the feeling in the winter when you start to stip the layers off as you get stuck into a good riding or work session
- Cosy evenings by the fire
- Not feeling guilty about spending a cosy evening by the fire because its too dark to do any 'jobs' outside.
- CHRISTMAS

Had this all summer long, no change coming for the winter then!!!

For me, winter is clipping, rugging, deep beds, no flies, and warming your hands inside your horses rugs when you check to see if they're toastie or not!!!

The only thing I can think of is that we now have an indoor school so I will not have to be soaked through and shivering most times I ride this winter.

Otherwise - nothing. Mud, cold, dark, ice, mucking out in the dark, slippery fields, muddy legs, muddy clothes....YUCK.

So many good things;
Warm woolly hats and jumpers
Fluffy horses
Nice clean or new NZ to pop on them
Sunrise on a frosty morning
Winter duvets, and blankets on your bed
Halloween fireworks and bonfires

Bad things - mud, Christmas and horizontal rain/sleet/wind (especially trying to change rugs on 3 fieldies in a gale).

Hunting - even if I'm just following on foot.
No flies.
No restricted grazing for good-doers.
Shetlands in their winter coats.
First year that all of mine will be out 24/7 so no mucking out
