my boy was looking a bit sad this evening and not himself so I trusted my gut and called the vet. itā€™s a bit of a mystery as he doesnā€™t LOOK very ill but they agreed heā€™s not right (sad looking, reluctant to move, bit of a tempā€¦) so weā€™ve been left with some medicines that should cover a couple of things. I think he might have a bit of colic and is being incredibly stoic about it - no rolling or belly kicking, (vet said some gut sounds so wasnā€™t alarmed) but I havenā€™t seen a poo. Pray for poos please šŸ™ itā€™s getting dark now so I wonā€™t be able to go on poo watch again until the morning šŸ˜

No point to this but I have so much love for this young horse that Iā€™ve immediately gone into stress mode and I could do with some positive vibes.

In the morning try and get him to drink plenty of fluid
Yes definitely, heā€™s also getting his powders in a very sloppy feed. A little dehydrated this evening but couldnā€™t decide if that was possibly the cause of the tummy ache or a symptom - result of him not wanting to move. He did have a slurp while we were down with him this eve, as well as his slop šŸ¤ž

Any sycamores around? Bit concerned about the reluctance to move. Hope I'm wrong and hope things improve soon !

No sycamores - there are some very suspicious looking smartweed(?) saplings that caused a panic but once they were confirmed not sycamore we got over that. Heā€™s looking brighter and is walking about a bit more, though still not 100%. I can hear the gut sounds from a mile away though so hoping thatā€™s a good sign!

So weā€™re not really any further ahead. Vet couldnā€™t get near him even when sedated šŸ˜ he let us give him the doses sedative ourselves but still wouldnā€™t let the vet near him to get anything in the vein. Heā€™s eating some bute and speedibeet soup and will be walking him regularly, maybe see if heā€™ll hop on the trailer. isnā€™t there an oral buscopan or similar? Vet didnā€™t seem to think so..

I'm afraid I would transport to the vet hospital so they can deal with him in stocks.

I think it sounds serious, sorry.

I would want him admitted so he could be tubed lots.

If they don't allow treatment at home, hospital is the only place for them IMO. It is the best place for a successful outcome and also likely to be cheaper if the impaction can be moved soonest.

One Christmas I had similar. Just starting to despair when a group of carol singers turned up. Mare leapt to her feet and started spinning spraying Poo everywhere! I gave a generous donation to them. Wins all round. Hope you get poo soon.

Thatā€™s basically whatā€™s happened here - heā€™s had an eye opener watching the the OH washing his show sheep and has done a poo šŸ™Œ has also drank some water and moving much more freely now. Going to carry on for pop #2 just in case that one was behind the blockage BUT itā€™s a decent size so šŸ¤žšŸ¤žšŸ¤ž

Nearest is 4+ hours away and donā€™t allow self referral so not really a feasible option. We have poo.
