Yesterday we had our dear old tb pts. He was 24 and had had a brilliant summer but to put him through another winter would have been wrong. He had several things going on that would have made life miserable for him once the ground got hard and it got cold and wet. He went with all who loved him around him. It was a very very sad day. What broke my heart though was the reaction of our other two. After Minnie had gone down we brought them over to see him. The look of concern on my daughter's pony's face was so sad. He couldn't quite understand what had happened and he kept coming back to him to have another look to make sure. Our mare who had lived with Minnie for 8 years came over, had a good look and then seemed to accept it. Later however as Minnie was taken away along the drive she came to the fence and walked along it next the trailer all the way to the gate. She couldn't see him but must have sensed that he was in there. After he had gone through the gate she stood and called after him for some time. They were not a pair bond just good friends. Minnie loved her dearly, she was always a bit aloof with him, obviously she loved him really.

It is so hard to lose them but I am sure you made a good decision for your horse. Remember the good times and I honestly believe their spirits wait at the bridge x RIP Minnie.

Well done on making the tough decision. Never easy.
The reaction of the others was sad, she was just saying her goodbyes, bless.
Many hugs.

I have a 30 yr old TB, who belongs to a relative. He isn't doing so well at the moment and another winter is not right for him, yet am finding it hard to get the message across to said rely. He thinks the horse will live forever, sadly they don't.

More hugs to OP and hope your other horses settle down without him soon. Sad day but good happy memories.

oh hun a big big hug for being brave and doing what was right - my thoughts are with you. Your horses reaction just shows they thnk and feel but with a caring person like you with them they will come through it . Cry your tears and just remeber what a great life your TB had with you and then look to the stars and see him galloping round the stars with an angel on his back - just want to hug you so )))))))))))))) hug to you((((((((( no other words xxxxxxx

He lived & left surrounded by love. There can be no better life or end. Lucky boy. Hugs to you left to cope with his passing.

very sad, my thoughts are with you.

we lost one of our mares a few years ago - i had to leave the field for a while and went i went back down for the cremation service to collect her, one of the other ponies was standing guard over her stable. That pony always seemed a little sad from that day on.
xx

Very moving post.
You are obviously a very brave and sensitive person, your animals are lucky to have you.
When my cat was run over...I found him in the middle of the night and left his body in the car. I got up at 1st light and buried him. I did not think to show him to my other cats, his friends. They started going up to the road. I swear they were looking for him.
So your actions,I think ,will make it easier for your others to understand what has happened.

I truly believe they understand, and I have seen horses stand over the grave of their friend for several days until they slowly drifted away. So sorry to hear of your lossxxx

So sorry for your loss.... what a kind caring owner you are.

We had our old boy PTS a couple of years ago and let his best friend of 10 years (mums very clingy horse) see him afterwards... He had a good sniff, and nuzzle then walked off.
My shetland licked him, and was taked away once he tried to go mountaineering up his shoulder.

We thought my mums horse would go mental and canter in his stable once the old boy was taken away, and for the first time in his life he didn't - horses definitely know, it's all so sad.

You have my deepest sympathies

So sorry to hear this but you have done what is right. Your mare obviously did love him afterall but she will grieve aswell for him so maybe just give her lots of love for a few days and make her feel secure.
My old boy will be going with his best friend (they are pair bonded) at beginning of october, as puttng him thriough another winter with his arthritis and her teeth wouldnt be fair. It will be a very day we have had him for 12years but it is time as they have had a lovely summer out together getting fat!!
I feel your pain already and dread how i will be afterwards *big hugs* to you and
R.I.P Old boy, you will have my boy joining you soon! Sleep tight x

Very sorry to hear that but at the same time it's nice to hear that he went at the right time, although it's left a lump in my throat now reading how your others reacted (((hugs)))
