Grand National meeting.

It’s 7 times in the whole race not 7 after the final fence. Whilst as written it would not preclude them using it 7 times after the final fence.
Possibly amend it so it can only be used once in between fences up to a maximum of 7 times.
Ah ok. This is from Racing TV.

However, the Whip Review Committee found that Mullins had used his whip one above the permitted level of seven from the final fence and as the Grand National is a Class One race, the usual penalty of four days for such an offence was doubled.

Mullins used the whip 8 times after the final fence. Then the horse all but collapsed after the finish, the cameras cut away and the jockey dismounted.

He used the whip to get the win on a very tired horse.

Have you ever ridden a fit racehorse in a racing saddle, with short leathers at a gallop with other racehorses?
We're back to that 'we can't maintain safety without inflicting aversives on an animal' which just makes me question whether people should be doing something potentially risky if they don't have a better way to mitigate the risk.

We could potentially all lead no risk lives but it would be a very dull world!

If a horse cannot be kept straight it's not ready to compete
If a horse isn’t 100% bombproof in traffic then it should never be allowed on the road.
If it kicks, bolts, breaks out of his field then it should be put down as it’s not safe to itself or others around it.
Risk needs to be mitigated not eliminated.

Er, yes that's why travelling straight is helpful, to mitigate risk of loss of control at speed, you ain't installing power steering, moving straight should be priority to any horse destined to compete for safety and performance and lack of it compromises performance

Its just steering ,first level basic dressage

Jude's neck straps hangs on my wardrobe door - that book is not realistic in many of it's depictions of the stud

I know it's one person's story, perspective

Why do you keep judes straps, if you don't mind me asking, or is too personal, sorry

I'm sorry but surely that can only by written by someone who's never ridden a galloping thoroughbred, never mind one on a racecourse, never mind a tired one on a racecourse facing a jump on a slightly wrong stride?
.

Oh don't apologise......please just carry on!!!

It's clear head on, very often race horses can be travelling very crooked

All horses destined to race need a decent mouth as well

Both might contribute as safety factors specially when jumping

The risk in this case is to the horse. You can't take that on for them in the name of a more exciting life for humans. I would have thought that point at least would be blindingly obvious.
It’s blindingly obvious to most of us that it’s a risky sport to horses and to humans. Only a few weeks ago a jockey was killed and injuries to jockeys are common.

Jockeys choose, horses do not. And way more horses die in the carrying out of this sport than humans do. If the same number of humans died it would have been banned years ago.

All sorts of reasons. I won’t get on a horse without one; if there’s a sudden swerve or nap towards traffic / a drop / a fence line with my leg in the way, a whip can be a lifesaver. And you don’t know if today is the day that might happen. If it’s a toss up between hitting a horse hard and going under a car, the horse is getting a slap.

Also useful for aids when you can’t reach with a hand or leg - especially when asking for extreme collection or a sideways movement.

Also useful for opening gates, moving brambles, waving at dogs, blocking cars from coming too close and in awful situations, hitting a human - my mum knows a woman who was pulled off of her 13.2 and raped.

So, whip in hand every time I’m on, same as the hat and the boots. Might never need it. Might save a life.

I used to have a cob on loan who'd bury you if you used a stick on him, even just a tickle. I also had an Irish import years ago you couldn't carry a stick on, I had a sharer who just like you claimed she would never ride without a stick. I said upto you. She soon changed her mind.

Only 16 out of 34 finished, how that is an improvement I don't know about previous years figures

Of the other 18:

13 pulled up
3 fell
1 brought down
1 unseated

The pulled up number is one that I think has increased year on year. On weather conditions, the problem with an April race is that you can either have Saturday's conditions or 6 degress and an absolute bog.

2024 stats: 32 started - 21 finished, with seven pulled up and four unseated. No falls.
