For those who don't know, a slitter is something that helps loosen up compacted soil and lets air in. This help drainage on wet lands and stops rain just running off on compacted ground. It also lets the grass roots go deeper and get nutrients more easily so that you get better nutritionally balanced grass.

But the question is how often should you do it. Do you just get a contractor to help once a year or is it something ideally you should do several times a year and therefore invest in your own machinery.

Anyone know?

Is this is the same as mole ploughing? If so I have been looking into this but havne't found a contractor as yet and our land is still too wet for machinery. I have read it lasts for 5-10 years.

i know where i work the gallops and fields are done more than once a year, at least twice spring and autumn.

We have slitting done twice a year on land that gets a lot of horse, pedestrian or vehicle traffic. We only have mole ploughing done in areas that don't drain and end up with standing water and is much less frequent.

can anyone tell me how damp the ground needs to be for this to work, are we talking about doing it around rolling time when it is moist but the tractor wont leave big tracks or will it work even if the ground is hard ?

this is a new concept for me but its definitely something i want to look into as our pasture is quite compacted in places

thanks for this post op, this is possibly the solution ive been looking for without having to put in field drains !

Use a depth stick if you can insert it into the ground without a lot of pressure about 4 inches then thats damp enough
