Hi everyone

So my horse has got grass mites :mad:. She is hanovarian x, so no feathers and in a field on her own. I am going away for 5 days on Monday so need to make sure i have an effective treatment plan in place from tomorrow for my friend to do, who is looking after her. My horse suffers with sweet itch too, so my friend will be busy!

So this afternoon i used hibiscrub and dried her legs, once they were totally dry i put some lincoln muddy buddy ointment on (this was all i could think of at the time and had this as a just incase, but she never got mud fever last year). She didn't suffer with these last summer, but we have moved yards since and a few horses seem to have the same problem, in different field.

Is this treatment going to be effective enough or is there something else which will work better? If so, i need to get it tomorrow. I also have itch gon lotion for her sweet itch, would this work?

Any advice and treatment plans appreciated, would like to clear this up as soon as possible.

Many thanks

Mites can be a nightmare to get rid of, only dectomax jabs work for mine. You could try frontline but you need the spray which you will have to get from the vets.

You could try a ivermectin based wormer, that kills mites, but you then have to worm them after 10 days because of baby mites hatching, or frontline dog flea drops { 1 large dog pipette for each leg,} and repeat after 10 days, in the mean time pig oil and sulpher applied every day, { if i miss a day tiny scabs appear} im affraid what you are using will not kill the mites { are you sure it is mites}

Im not entirely sure it is mites after doing some research. My yard owner says it is, but she hasn't been showing any signs of itchiness around her legs, i.e. no stamping etc at all. It is obviously sore, but i am now thinking that it may be mud fever. The ground has only recently just started to dry up these past couple of days, so could this be possible?

so i have just been down the yard and already her legs are looking better. She only has 2 very small white socks, and also hs a bit of scabbiness abover her ergot, which is black so don't think it is photosensitivity. I think i have caught it early, and have a treatment plan in place. Looking at it this morning, it isn't as bad as it first appeared now it has been cleaned. Hopefully should have cleared up in a few days.

Thanks for the tips though, feel much better i have had another good look at it today.

Part the hair and dab with a piece of cellotape and take it to your vet. With luck you should have caught some mites (if they are there) and he can very quickly identify them under the microscope.
