My pony is having to wear a grazzing muzzle this year due to being very fat, totally my fault fed him too much during the cold spring and then the grass suddenly came through and I got caught out. He is starting to loose a bit of weight but is still too fat. I have also upped his exercise too.

However it is very hot today 27C and I felt a bit mean leaving him out with his muzzle on he has the shires bucket one. He does have natural shade in his field and it seems cooler in his field than his stable. He was in his stable part of the day and was so hot as it as airless he just lay down and slept, in the end I put him back out as I thought he was getting hotter being in than out as there was some breeze outside and he could be in the shade of the trees with the other horses flicking their tails on him. The stand in a group and flick their tails on each other.

He lives out so has been having his grazing muzzle on most of the time for the last two weeks except in the evening after work when he comes up to the yard for some riding and grooming and soaked hay and at weekends for part of the day again when the same thing happens.

This is the first year I am using the grazing muzzle so I am new to this, he is wearing it all the time as there is quite a lot of grass and clover in his field and he is greedy so if I took it off he would probably eat more than he needed in a very short amount of time and end up obese again. however the problem with the heat is that I can't exercise him as much either, we did a short hack this morning for about 40 minutes before it got too hot and tomorrow I have a lesson at 11.00 for an hour but will have to take it a bit easy as I am not good in the heat either.

Do other people leave a grazing muzzle on in the hot weather?

Do you have a stable for him? Could he not come in during the day, and out at night when it's cooler. That's how we manage the pony I look after

I do have a stable for him and I did contemplate leaving him in but it was really hot and airless in his stable and it felt cooler outside.

He is also not 100% reliable in his stable as if he has enough of being in his stable he will jump out and I can't leave him with ad lib hay due to being on diet!

My guys wear muzzles during the night from about 6pm till about 8/9 in the morning and then in with soaked hay during the day. If this is not possible then if you are using the shires type you could cut out some of the material sections out where the nose is positioned, I have done this before and it worked just the same, or get a bigger muzzle. What a faf hey horses are!

He is a new forest pony wearing a full sized muzzle which I think is biggest size they do! I might be able to get two muzzles though and cut holes in one so he has a hot weather muzzle.

Mine is a full size on a pony too so doesn't get sweaty (shires deluxe one with fleece padding) and I haven't had to apply sunscreen at all this year - her nose is as smooth as a baby's bottom!
