grazing muzzle rubs

Hi, in summer one of our ponies wears a grazing muzzle as such a good doer and although his muzzle wrapped in fleece / washed often it has rubbed patches near his nose / he has lost most of his forelock due to rubbing to get his muzzle off - nothing in field to rub on except posts between electric fencing - any ideas only wears muzzle between 6 - 8 hours a day but need a forelock and a face without risking too much grass !

Not my fields and no bare patches or less grass to put him on.

Don't know what you can do if he is rubbing against things to get his muzzle off, but if it's the muzzle itself that is rubbing, I've found that duct tape is really effective. I have wrapped it around the 'bucket' part that was rubbing my horse's face, and it just reduces the friction enough to stop the rubs. Before that, her chin was getting rubbed raw where it touched the muzzle.

She has sheepskin on the cheekpieces and over the poll, and duct tape on the nose bits. No rubs, but then she doesn't scratch against things.

Oh, the other thing you could try is putting a fly mask on underneath his muzzle, I did that before getting the bits of sheepskin to stop it rubbing the side of her head. Worked really well - might stop him scrubbing his forelock off?

thanks - i was looking at sheepskin as fleece may not be enough protection - does it have to be real or is faux just as good? i dont think he is rubbing on posts just rolls on the ground for england - will ask hubby about duct tape

Nope, in fact I have now settled for faux sheepskin as it's easier to keep clean. I bought some dirt cheap sheepskin blinkers off ebay and threaded them on the cheekpieces, and a sheepskin noseband over the poll.

Duct tape was the key for her nose/chin rubs though, I've wrapped the individual pieces of webbing all round the back. It's waterproof so stays put pretty well. The things we do for our neds, eh?

the shires muzzle i bought rubbed realy badly no matter what i did .. i gave up and bought the Greenguard Grazing Muzzle and it is fantastic , it has never rubbed .
