Grazing muzzles - getting scabby lips??

Eek - finally bit the bullet and bought a grazing muzzle for my girl (she's not impressed, but resigned to her fate I think). She's only worn it 2 nights, but has odd rough scabby patches about the size of a 1p piece on each corner her upper lip. They don't seem sore, but I'm worried they will be!

Is this normal?! Will they go if I press on (i.e. does the skin get tougher?) I think they are more noticeable because she has white hair on her lips/nose. Obviously I don't want her to get sore (feeling mean enough as it is), but I'd like to persist with the muzzle if I can!

If you can pad where the sore bits are the skin will harden up. I resorted to animalintex pads with tape, they wore away quite quickly but the sore bits healed up nicely.

Sadly my mare learned how to eat (initially she stood sulking) but trying to stuff her face she burned her chin

(About the size of a 50p) I was gutted - rested it and healed it and tried again and it did it again so I'm back on restricted hours grazing - If you find a solution let me know!

My share horse did exactly the same thing, was trying to stuff his face and ended up cutting/burning his chin. Tried sewing a piece of material on to it but it didnt help so ended up leaving it and he can now only go out for a few hours :-( Is yours the greenguard one (to OP) as apparantly, according to our YO, that one shouldnt rub!

No - went for the bargain basement Shires one (wanted to see if it would work before having a major splurge).

Urghhh.

I'm not sure I could pad it, as it must be the base that she is getting rubs from. Blast! Don't want to restrict her turnout any more, and all this rain will make the grass grow

Hmmm, well Y0's mare wears hers all day and to be fair she doesnt have any marks or rubs so i think it may be worth investing in it. Maybe worth asking whether anyone on here has one and whether they do actually work?
I know, restricting TO is a pain, really wish my share horse could stay out for longer!

My old mare used to have to wear one with me at least 12 hours a day and yes it does rub initially, however the skin does indeed toughen up and all becomes well. I actually put Vaseline on her nose every day initially and whilst not perfect it at least lubricated the area and slwoed down rubbing.

ah, that's an idea - I wondered about putting something on her nose but thought it might end up making the skin softer!

Will persevere then, she is not usually a sensitive flower and I really could do without worrying about her scoffing too much.
