We're about to move our grey mare to a new yard which is absolutely ideal in every way except that they have rubber mats and small chopped straw beds.
The standard of care is very high and they skip out loads, but my dapple grey mare loves to roll and lie down and I've got a feeling she's going to look like a hippo within days.
Anyone have tips on keeping horses clean if they're on mats? I'm planning to use a turnout rug over a fleece or similar instead of her normal stable rug - does this actually work or does the grime even soak thru these.
The yard does have a nice wash box so I can clean her up if absolutely necessary, but I'm concerned that she might turn dirty yellow!

My oh has a grey gelding and I have a coloured mare.
Buy lots of shampoo and get used to stable stains unfortunately. When either are clean and immaculate, turn your back and in a flash there's a splodge of something mucky!!

Tell me about it! My grey mare spends more time on floor than on feet so I know about dirty. She's on rubber mats with shavings and I put a LW turnout rug on top of stable rugs and it does keep her and other rugs clean. She still gets poo on her neck but I can cope with that! In the summer the yard spot wash her daily so that stains don't get ground in.

My grey loves to lie down in the stable.I buy stable rugs with a polypropylene outer, its thicker and soaks up i bit less mess then normal rugs, they have the texture of a turnout rug. The only place i know you can get them from is robinsons, as not many people make them.
This one from Horseware has a polypropylene and a neck cover, double the protection from the mucky mess! Hope this has helped.

My grey is on rubber with straw, but it's an 'ample' bed for matting. He loves to roll, that's why he has rubber- as he digs down to the concrete otherwise.
He always wears a turnout in the stable- IMO the best option anyway. And I always go for full neck rugs: I'd go for a light weight full neck over a medium weight standard neck everytime- Does that make sense?
I don't have more than usual probs with him been stained

Try using a grooming block which gets the worst of the stains out (not all but it keeps them looking respectable) without washing or use a waterless shampoo! Also apparently using purple spray on grey tails gets the yellowinsh staining out so it could work on the body (never tried this so you might want to try it on a horse that won't mind having a funny coloured tail but a very experienced friend told me!)
