My horse was lame in front (swapping which legs half way through) for around 6 weeks. We had scans and blocks done at newmarket and concluded nothing was wrong so was likely growing pains. He has grown almost two inches in 12 weeks but seems to be slowing down now. He has been sound about 5 weeks now and has hacked and is now being built up on the lunge slowly.

I am worried when he starts jumping in september that he will go lame again. I think I am being paranoid as he has been lunged on grass, and bombing round his field with no issues!

Any experience welcomed!

He has just gone 4. The location of the pain was between the fetlock and the lower knee. Scans all clear, had the best look at them for peace of mind!

Hes having a easy few weeks lunging and building up slowly as recommended but I do worry when it comes to jumping he will go lame again. I am already missing the 4 year old final, which is okay I dont push any horse, but I do worry once in work again he will go lame.

Paranoid I think, he has been more than fine so far!

If it was me, the very last thing I would be doing was lunging, it puts far too much pressure on the joints. If he can't be turned away to finish naturally then long reining in straight lines is far better for his body.

My vet said lunging is fine, just to keep an eye. He is on a special diet to control his growing. Physio said he needs the passoa to strengthen behind, more so now he has become dangerous on the roads.

He only has about 5 - 10 a day and only when the grounds good! He will do this for 6 weeks until the menage is done and then start ridden work and I am told by then he can do everything, but I will go slow, plenty of time before blue chip quals.

Also when I say he was lame, he was less than 1/10th lame, I seem to be very good at spotting it as two vets missed it and another could only just see it! He was sound by the time he got to newmarket!

Vets told me he wasnt lame enough not to work but he had 7 weeks off anyway and started work 3 weeks ago....

Because I bought him to jump the 4 year olds on and imported him for this, this all costs alot of money. I dont mind missing that but I would like to qualify him for blue chip next easter else he has cost me alot of money and not yet served the purpose I bought him for. I dont push horses beyond what they can do at that time, but I dont wait around till they are 5 or 6 either....
