Well, my horse obviously fancied a few days off, because I found him this morning with one of his eyes mostly closed and one further inspection found what looked like a small scratch on his cornea and a small cloudy area as well. Vet came, put dye in his eye, and he's got an ulcer nearly the size of my small fingernail on his eye!

So, now he has to stay in a dark stable for a few days and have antibiotic eyedrops in 4 times a day! He's looking quite sad and sorry for himself. Of course I was hoping to do quite a lot of work with this week and next, getting ready to run him again weekend after next (he ran on the 25th feb, but got quite tired towards the end of the race, felt like he needed to be a touch fitter). So now I have a horse on boxrest even though he isn't lame. Very frustrating!!
Anyway, my question is about something completely different. My bosses niece's 11.2hh Section A mare is staying with us for a while, and the owner is desperate for me to school her a bit while she's here, but I'm worried that I'm too big and heavy for her (she looks quite fine boned to me, but it's been a while since I've seen a pony). I'm 5'6 and just over 9st with my riding gear on. What do you think?

Yes, and I have serious doubts my ar*e will fit into the saddle

Oh the embarassment.

I'll just have to ride her when nobody's there

Seriously though, do you think she could cope with my weight, or would I flatten her?

I don't know to be honest. Could you work with her on the ground??

That's an idea worth thinking about. Thing is though, there's no reason why the owner couldn't do that herself, she's got the time. She's quite a bit heavier than me though, that's why she thought I could ride her, I think.

On the eye subject............ our dogs often get eye ulsers, and we use a cream called Fucithalmic, which only needs to go in twice a day, and keeps the eye more moist (better healing conditions).
I don't know if this is suitable for horses, but our vet also gave us drops which had to go in four times a day- the dog is a nightmare to get them in, so I said we didn't want them.

The Section A is perfectly capable of carrying you - whether she will do so willingly is another matter and if she's anything like ours she'll buck like crazy!

(Has suffered ignominy of coming off daughter's Section A)
