OH and I feel it's time to think about a new GSD pup, aiming for spring 2014 or spring 2015.

The main requirement is temperament. We want a dog that's suitable for a family, with young children and of course appreciate that socialisation and training are key but we want a breeder who breeds primarily for temperament. We would expect any responsible breeder to have hip scores, haemophilia testing and at least views on degenerative myelopathy (I don't know if I am 100% convinced myself by the new DNA test).

The lady who bred Dizzy no longer breeds GSDs and we are not in France so I am not sure I want to put the puppy through the stress of moving countries, although it is always an option.

However, before we look in the UK does anyone know of any breeders in France? I have spoken with my vets and dog trainer but there is a tendency to breed protection dogs in France which is not what we want.

Also can anyone help by looking over pedigrees of potential parents and letting me know what you think? I don't really know the GSD lines!

Many thanks!

I can certainly look at pedigrees if you want to PM me.

I take it you mean NOW in France as opposed to NOT in France?
I know a couple of show kennels over there but I'd have to have a look at them to see what they're breeding currently.

Just PM'd you a link to the French breed society which has lots of further links to shows, trials, clubs etc and a few more ideas - I would always recommend going to an event or training and seeing what type you like the most and take it from there :)

Thank you!

I did mean 'not'. They breed for personal protection, generally dogs that live outside and are trained (and I use the word loosely here!) to guard. This seems to be very fashionable over here although it may be a regional thing rather than a national trend.

Great advice from CC re French breed clubs. However, if you do decide you want to have a pup from the UK I wouldn't worry about stressing it with the travel. One of Freya's sisters went to Spain (her owners had their previous dog from me and then moved abroad so when they lost him contacted me again). It was all relatively straight forward, I had her pet passport and innoculations done, and kept her for an extra month or so, they then came over and collected her. They spent a few days with friends half way between me and Dover so she got used to them, and then travelled on an overnight ferry which allowed dogs in the cabins. She travelled absolutely fine the whole way, and adapted to the Spanish weather very quickly, so I certainly wouldn't write off getting a pup from the UK.

That's good to know MM, thanks. It's the extra month that bothers me to be honest. I want to 'get my hands' on the puppy for socialisation purposes as quickly as possible (8 weeks is my preference) and while you were lovely to keep the puppy for them I would worry that not every breeder would be able to do that and put in all the work involved.
