GSD Owners - I Pity You!

And I think I've been misunderstood: the title is misleading, yes, people have taken it the wrong way, but easy to do so. I see that you meant sorry for people all being tarred with the same brush. I was merely adding my thoughts, nothing more. The subject (of dog being attacked) is close to my heart: bloody sick of screaming at out of control vicious dogs whose owners are totally incapable of recalling their dog. :(

I do see your point, but the title and the 'trophy' dog thing rubbed me up the wrong way, I know it wasn't the intention but I have heard people say that people only want to own breeds like GSDs, Dobes, Rotts etc as a status symbol and to look hard.
I'm knee high to a grasshopper and my mother is a bloody librarian, we don't own these dogs for looks :p

Pity me in about seven months time!!! :p

Dobiegirl, I wish GSDs weren't so popular too :( the less there are of them, the less they can be exploited and ruined by numpties.

In the vets I have been bitten by

Spaniels (considered a family dog)
Retriever (considered a family dog)
Labrador (considered a family dog)
cockers ( always wary of them)
cavaliers ( not good to be bitten by their usually manky teeth)

My opinion is the family type breeds have been terribly over bred and are not the dogs ppl once thought they were.... the dogs with the reputations like terriers seem to be getting nicer?

We had a GSD dog in once who I took out of the kennel to bring up to the surgery for a GA and it decided I was it only friend and nobody else was allowed near it/me? I had to sedate him unaided as vets couldn't get near, I guess the dog felt i was in need of protection?

Never met a nasty rottweiler, doberman, staff or gsd... of course they exist but all these stereotypes are disgusting... any dog can be aggressive and I must admit I haven't met a nice chihuahua yet! I think they are a breed who protect their owners!

Very few people understood the OP, shes done nothing wrong, just used the word pity in the wrong context, I knew exactly what she meant!

The local drug dealer was strutting around with his fat staffie the other day and it made me giggle, it was quite obviously the friendliest thing you ever did see!! what a let down for the druggie eh?

HAHA just spat my wine out!!!!!! Are you stereotyping librarians???? Does your mum have a bun and little round glasses haha xx

Late to the fight as usual! And tbh I really can't be bothered, I have been hearing the crap about GSDs turning etc for over 50 years. I have grown up with the breed and have never been bitten, neither have my children and if you count shows I must have been with hundreds of GSDs in my life. My 2 children have both been bitten by a neighbours schipperke, as have several other people, were that one of my dogs it would have been put down long ago.
I went to quite a big horse show last weekend with Evie, she was good as gold, but at one point we walked past a l/c chihuahua which launched itself at her barking and snapping at her, bless her she actually jumped and then turned to look at it as if to say "my god are you a dog", but quite a few spectators found it hilarious, can you imagine if the situation had been reversed.
Not getting at you Una, I do see your point although I think your title was a bit misleading, and yes we do have to put up with idiots getting the breed as status symbols, though luckily I do think they are going more for other unfortunate breeds now.

One of my clients, has two gorgeous GSDs, and the one, is the biggest monster of a dog I have ever seen. It is like a small bear.
She is quite wealthy, and has a big house, the dogs are trained to bark at people/things that go past the gates, for security. However, they are the most loveliest dogs ever, the first time I went there, I have these two giant dogs barking and running towards me and I (although I have had big dogs all my life) am cacking my pants... They get to me, and low and behold, I get licked to death and they try and get in the car, generally all over me. I was scared due to a preconception, not about the breed, but about the whole situation. P.S. I then noticed the diamante collars :P :P :P. Bless them. I was no longer worried, any dog with bling on cannot be bad haha :P

I think the point I'm trying to make is, different dogs are bred for different purposes, hence where this 'trophy dog' idea has come from and people form opinions about a 'type' of dog, not the actual dog itself. Same as the whole TB controversy really.

Our old collie was attacked by a GSD, twice infact, once as a pup, once when he was about 8, different dogs obviously. We had to fight the later dog off, no owner in sight, I did feel sorry for the poor thing actually, looked ragged. As others have said though, it could have been any dog.

On another note, would anyone care to tell me why my dog humps golden retrievers? No other breed, doesn't matter what sex, if he sees one, he just can't help himself. Any ideas?

Im sorry if you've been offended, that was about as far from my intention as you could get :( All of the GSDs (and their owners) on here are wonderful abassadors for their breed. They are beautiful dogs and ones I would be proud to own. The trophy dog comment was not in ANY way directed at you or anyone else on this forum at all. I dont kno about the area where you live, but here at least it is staffies, GSDs and Mastiffs that are bought as status symbols and not trained or cared for correctly. That makes me mad as they are all fantastic breeds in the right hands. I was not at all implying that anyone on here has bought their dogs as a trophy dog. Im lucky that I dont own a breed that suffers in this way (in such a public manner) from being owned by idiots and I do feel sorry for people who work tirelessly to promote the breed in a positive way only to come up against bad press and irresponsible owners over and over again. I know I would find that very, very distressing, im glad that you and the other GSD owners on here dont take it to heart like I would.

Again, im sorry for offending you (and anyone else), that was definately not my intention at all. Im really disappointed by how this thread has gone, I think im going to report it and ask to get it closed before it degenerates anymore :(

The only GSD I've had any real contact with was my sisters rescue - she got her from the animal shelter coz the dog decided there and then that my sister was the best person ever and demanded to go home with her :D She was only about 18 months but had hardly had any socialisation and as a result could be a bit growly. My sister had a nightmare of a time getting people to speak to her and introduce their dogs to her. She turned out to be the most loyal dog in the world for my sister - sadly she had to be pts aged 4 because of a brain tumour :(

I don't pity people with dogs that are seen as 'trophy' dogs but I don't envy them their task of changing people's attitudes.

Eh? I'm not offended! Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy debate - it's good to talk :)

I get rubbed up the wrong way frequently :p :D

I do try and promote the breed as much as I can but there's no way to, erm, legislate? against idiots, unfortunately. Just have to keep plugging away and keep positive.
If I got down about all the bull poo that happens, in dogs and out of dogs, then I would not get out of bed in the morning.

DD I wish she would shhh, woman never stops talking :p
