I have a nomination to Guidam (obviously frozen); we tried three times last year to no avail. The mare did take on the 3rd attempt but the embryo did not progress and was aborted at about 4 weeks.
At that point it was getting a little bit late in the year so we decided to wait until this year to start over.
So here we are again and I really am in a quandary as to whether to try this again.

Pro's:
1. We have a 2yr old by Guidam out of this mare and she is an absolute cracker; we wouldn't even consider letting her go.
2. The mare obviously crosses very successfully with him.
3. As he is now sadly deceased offspring are a rare commodity.

Cons:
1. Cost of having to go through the events of last year once more to have an empty mare.

My heart says try once more; my head says no don't do it and start looking at alternatives.
So I have decided to cop out and see if anyone on this forum can make the decision for me :).

If you don't try again will you always be thinking 'What if..?'

If you can afford it and you really want the same breeding as your other youngster then I would try again!

Good Luck what ever you decide :)

Onless you have a young fertile mare don't spend the money. I spent a fortune doing the same thing over the last few years trying to get an old mare in foal. In the end I brought a young mare to use the stallion fee and she went in foal first time. You might be better to use the Guidam semem on a young mare?

Hello there, gosh you have managed to get really good terms for a dead stallion! Normally dead ones are fees per dose- so very well done you!!

I think what is meant to be will be go with your gut instinct. Frozen semen (partially due to the people who put it into mares!) is awkward with some mares, so you may be better using a young and fertile womb with no hang ups- I probably would.

If you do not try you may always wonder why, its only money in the end.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
The mare is only 12 but the motility is very low.
Maybe we will give her one shot when she is absolutely spot on and then call it a day if it doesn't work. I will let you know then Eothain ;)
I am not partial to Luidam (just a personal opinion); A.Quidam would be another option but I would definitely consider Peppermill as an alternative. She is a little too big for my other favourites Kannan and Winningmood.

Luidam lives about 15 minutes away from me. I haven't used him yet, even though I think he's absolutely fantastically fabulously amazingly super! August 6th 2004, where were you? I know where I was, jumping every fence in the Aga Khan along with Luidam and Billy Twomey to get the double clear that won the Nations Cup for us!

Thank you Ballyshan.
I know Eothain, I absolutely hear you; I can't debate his success for a moment, he just doesn't rock my boat for some reason.
I have got to be really 100% sure as we have drastically reduced our mares.
However with all the stallions I wan to use I need to remedy that situation too.
Last week I saw a 4yr old by Argentinus out of a Voltaire mare in foal to Cumano...nearly considered re-mortgaging the house....only that still would not have bought her!!!

might well be worth a PM to AP on this subject before you decide. Did you have standard AI or endoscopic delivery? If not it might be worth doing this as the motility is low.

Hi KarynK, it was standard AI; we did suggest using endoscopic but it didn't happen last time. This time I will push for this as an option. Use less semen, higher success rate, everyones a winner.
