horse prices seem pretty nuts at the mo , but lots seem not to be selling too , so i'd like your opinion on what you really would pay for a certain type of horse

a friend of mine has got quite interested in dressage after me encouraging her but now her ambitions have outgrown her horse which has arthritic hocks & breathing problems

she would really like a horse like mine ( she can't have him! ) basically he rising 12 , very well behaved ( ridden , handling , travel , comps etc ) verging on schoolmaster with Bd points at novice , recently won an unaff elem champ & is having his first BD elem outing at start of feb

i think she won't be able to find something like him at an affordable price but she does want something with experience

so , what would you guys say is a realistic price to pay for

1. a horse like mine

2. a horse essentailly like mine in temperament & ride but say been competing prelim & done well & maybe ready to move up to novice

she wants a horse about 10-12 years old that is a bit of a got the t shirt type that will help her learn as opposed to throw challenges at her

thankyou!!

Quite a lot of money. It depends a bit on whether she wants the judge-appeal to go with it, which will let her win, or is happy just to practice and compete for fun. You pay for the T-shirt so a reliable type with potential to do a little bit more at dressage I would think would be 7-10k. Less for 'fun' type all-rounder perhaps or an older horse (teens) or for a green type but the sort you describe are hard to find and everybody wants one and nobody is selling theirs

In my opinion i would say you need at least £4k to start hunting for something like that but i'd wouldnt be suprised if "the horse" was £6k to £9k

For example my YO brought a 5yr broken with basics with no T-shirt & no fancy breeding but he's the easy going i'll give it my best at everything sort and he was £5k.

mmm , thats what i feared , horses like mine on the main sale sites seem to be in the £7 - £10K bracket the top end of which i certainly think is steep , but i guess if thats what people are paying........

do you think the 'judge appeal' makes that much diff? i often get comments on test sheets of what an attractive horse my boy is but its not like we win all the time?! i guess people will often pay more for a flashy looking horse though

I sold my horse 2 1/2 yrs ago, 11yr old 16.1 been there done it all and with the red rossette to prove it. He was well known in the area as very successful at local shows. I sold him for £6k. I think if they are that good, they are worth their weight in gold, hence why they arent cheap. He went to a tall 13yr old who wanted to move onto something bigger that had done it all and would teach her the ropes. Be wary of anything too cheap as it is likely to come with problems. Dont forget if they are older they will have wear and tear so vetting is essential. What about loaning something?

mmm , me thinks she is being a bit unrealistic on price , she said £3-3,5K , which i tactfully tried to suggest was a bit on low side
