Had the vet due out to my horse today as after 2 months R&R to do a few flexion tests and see if he was sound enough to ride ! Along with some bute and the rest he seemed to be coming sound on his near fore which he has had nothing but problems with since I got him in August.

Anyway went to get him and his friends in from the field and he came cantering over and then slowed to a trot and then I noticed he was lame and this same leg was twice the size of the other !

There and then I collapsed in a heap of tears. I brought them in and hosed his leg off he has cut it open all down the inside. As the vet was coming anyway I thought he shoudl probably check it out.
Vet came and looked at it and thought it was caused by barb wire although we don't have any at all just electric fencing which they all respect.

We couldn't work out how he had done it but it wasn't very hot so he has got anti biotics for 4 days and I have poulticed tonight while he is in !

It has just been one thing after another bruised sole / over reach/ a kick all on the same leg all meaning that I haven't hardly ridden him since I had him!!

I had him on loan for a month before I brought him and he was fine, we were jumping and everything.

The vet said he is probably very bored and as soon as his leg has gone down and he looks 99% sound then I can start walking out which should keep him out of trouble.

When I first got him he was an absolute horror to handle and be around but he has got so much better and made loads of progress, I just want to be able to start riding him !!

Sorry it's long but needed to let it out as have a pretty non horsey OH although he does try xxxx

Thanks for listening

You are NOT alone!!!!!

Try this : my TB baby brought on lovingly from 6mo is now 6years old. He is gorgeous, mannered and so trainable - but chronic sacro-iliac (back/pelvic problems) mean he is constanly in pain and goes forwards and backwards in his training like a yo yo. 5 1/2yrs later and he is not even done a dressage test yet. Nearly ready for BD, then the injury flared up again.

It goes with the territory - esp if you own a TB! GOOD LUCK

Thanks both of you !

GG Rider yes he's a TB and he's an ex racer but my friend brought one from the same trainer who is at the yard 5 mins from us and hers is not half as accident prone !!

It's strange as he isn't a wuss he is out 24 / 7 most of the time in a 200g with no neck as he gets to hot in anything else !! I know it isn't half as bad as some other injuries posted on here am just feelling v. sorry for my self

I had a spell like that a few months ago when everything went wrong with my horse, i dreaded going to the yard in case something else had happened to her. Now she's fine and that time has passed. Don't despair, it will get better. The weather is rubbish for riding at the moment anyway if that makes you feel any better!

Sounds like things are on the up then for you. I know you feel gutted about him coming up lame and from the sounds of it he's a lovely character and loving life, face it in this weather what riding can you do and Spring is just around the corner. Think Positive, Glass half full, not half empty
