Well a fantastic day just turned into another nightmare and has just ruined my summer :(

Went to the beach today travelled there fabulous got there she was fab just takced up and straight onto the beach :D

Went right in up past her knees for a paddle and was splashing like crazy, very proud of her as water is her scary thing lol.

Set off along the beach walks and trots my friends horse had never been to the beach so he was bouncing and so was she. Warmed them up then set off at a trot then a canter then got past the first few wee river things hit a nice long bit and WEEEEEEEEE :D :D Terminal velocity!!!! It was fabulous took my breath away, never had her go this fast not even at the rideout last year :D

Well she kept up with Dezi who is an ex-racer (he was a mile-r) so she did well although sh tired quicker than he did but did sooo well, came back nicely in my hand then Suzi stopped Dezi. We walked back for a bit then cantered nicley back the river bit crossed then had to go further up the beach to avoid some people with a windbreak and kids as Dezi was getting funny about them, came to one of the drain pipes and she wasnt liking it kept backing up staring then bang, her right hind disappeared, right through a rusty drain cover :(

She freaked and pulled it back out ripping off the shoe and pairing her leg to the bone, the same leg she hurt last year. Here it is at the vets

So here we go again. :( After all the progress we had made jumping and getting our confidences up its all been for nothing :( Poor Girly is sore again :(

Omg !!!

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGE hugs)))))))))))))))))))) for you, and

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{VIBES}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} for your horse.

What is the treatment/prognosis ?

I am so very sorry :(

oh pooooooo!!!!!!! what a sore sight :( hoping it might be one of those that look awful but heal up nicely!!! lots of vibes for your little girly :) stay strong!

Oh No , what a bloody disaster , you poor souls , after having such a fab day too! What bad luck , try and stay positive - i know it's hard , but she'll mend again soon with some TLC , have you got something else you could ride in the meantime so as not to miss out on the good riding weather?

Thanks guys.

No bones broken and no apparent damage to tendons, but very big laceration with lots of room for infection and possible complications.

Worst bit will be the box rest, Eowyn doesnt 'DO' stabled very well unless Kia is there and he cant stay in as he stiffens up and swells and is sore :( So stuck as to what to do. Might mark her out a 12x12 in the field and put down a bale of straw with bucket and haynet just so as she is with him and therefore wont box walk or weave or freak out :(

Or does this sound like a bad idea??? I said to vet and they kinda left it up to me :(

I have my boy Kia but hes getting on a bit and I dont really jump him so I am going to have to cancel a few cheques as the comps I entered her into he might or might not do :(

sounds like a good plan. I would also start with a really good calmer, or if necessary get something from the vet for the first week, till a calmer kicks in ?

Awww I am so sorry to hear this, looks so sore bless her hope she recovers well though
your plan sounds good though and you can only try it.... you never know....

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry, both for you and little horsey- that must be seriously sore!!

I think she might appreciate That idea, I always hate having to lock them in a box too :(

When mine was locked in for mOnths my vet gave me acp to settle him on his stressy days- might be worth getting some? Or sedalin was a help too.

Hugs :( If it's missed tendons and hopefully the ligaments, fingers crossed it'll be fairly fast to heal anyhoo!!!

ACP doesnt touch her no matter how much I give her and Sedalin again she shakes off fairly quickly. She threw off 3 doses of IV sedative today in under an hour and a half and it wasnt small measures she was getting :(

I think I will sort her out a little paddock tomorrow and see how she does :)

Gosh! That's such bad luck! :( Makes me realise how lucky we were when a pony stuck a front foot through a rusty manhole cover, but luckily didn't have a scratch.

Don't worry, all of your hard work is not for nothing, it will come back much quicker now you have already done it, and will help when it comes to bringing back into work, I'm sure :)
As for box rest, follow your gut. In humans it's been proven that you heal quicker if you are less stressed, if your horse is likely to be stressed in a box, you may well be better off taping of a small pen. Also, the laceration isn't (from what I can see) somewhere where it's likely to reopen if she moves around a bit.

Good luck getting her better, poor baby :(

What bad, bad luck! I really feel for you!

Go for the small paddock. That is what I do with mine rather than box rest because I think it gives them a greater sense of normality. If you can move the small paddock every 2-3 days that will give her some grass to keep her interested in and at the end of the day if that keeps her calmer than the box rest then it's better for her overall chances of recovery (I assume the ground is very dry where you are so less of a chance of getting the wound dirty).

Poor girly. I hope it heals very quickly. As someone said, fingers crossed it might be one of those that looks awful but heals in not too long a time.

I'd definately go for the small paddock if it will keep her stress free. We had my horse in a 12 x 12 paddock when he was first turned out after 5 months box rest - I got super efficient at moving it daily so he always had grass. We found the best way was to make one long strip parallel to the fence line, then have two short moveable sections to make up the short sides. Then every day I just picked the short sides up and moved them along!

What a shame - fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. It looks nasty but clean so should heal quickly. ((((hugs and healing vibes)))))

Healing vibes for your mare and thoughts for you...it's always something with horses!!
When my mare had an injured hock last year she was kept in a paddock 3 x the size of her stable on the advice of the vet at Leahurst and the physio (after box rest wasn't working - she was good but not good for hock). Do what you feel is best for your horse.

Oh Nikki hun,I'm so sorry that your day ended in such a way, poor you and poor LOTR girl.

She really does put you through the mill injury wise doesn't she, just get over one thing and she finds another thing to do to herself!!

Everything crossed it heals quicker than anticipated, and that you can manage her with the small paddock idea.

Hugs hun,and chin up it will sort itself out,and hopefully you can have some fun on the Kia dude for now.

It has been my experience that box rest actually, in many cases, does more harm than good. I agree that freedom to gallop around won't do the healing process any good, but gentle handwalking in many cases encourages the blood circulation which helps healing. Of course you need to talk to your vet and he may not agree, but be aware of the alternative possibilities. Comfrey and aloe vera are very good healing herbs.....As you said, lack of movement encourages "stocking" "swelling" and "stiffening". Good luck and I hope your horse heals perfectly.....

Hi

Poor you
Ok if your vet is happy its flesh etc I would do as you plan and have them in a area where they can still walk. Personally its good to keep moving as it will heal up as it is used(ie not tight if that makes sense).

I am great believer in keeping things uncovered however!! Flies just keep an eye..you may need to cover???. You do want it to drain though as it heals. Keep an eye on temperature of horse too.

I had similar gash on a hind last year, we betadined it twice daily, saline rinses and betadined again. You will get blue seepage(from the iodine). Flies were really rampant, we did end up getting a cattle repellent (used by farmers on cows from our small animal vet which we dabbed v carefully on his back and hind end..not in the wound as it burns & cant remember its name..will look for old bottle now as I need to get some more). But it took weeks and we did have a horrid lump for months after on his leg, which is still there but the least of our worries once it was healing. He was sore for quite a while. I did find vaseline on the hair did help stop flies nibbling. Good luck ps be careful if you use iodine as some forms of it can sting! Betadine if you can get hold of it.

Poor Eowyn :(

My sister's gelding was on box rest in a paddock rather than his stable several years ago because he's a chronic weaver and it was summer when all the other horses were out, so he'd have gone bonkers. We made a small paddock for him using electric fencing in the corner of a field with a few other horses in and it worked perfectly :)
