Yesterday I had the vet out, I thought he had just done his tendon (I say just...). So vet did lameness workup to rule out anything else, and he was hopping on a hard surface in a circle in trot but 100% sound in the school. Thats deff not the tendon then. Nerve blocks in foot later - sound again :'(. Vet is almost positive its navicular - scans and x-rays to confirm thursday :(. Now to top it all off he has also done his tendon (scans thurs again) and re thrown his splint (all showed up on the same day!!). BUT thats not all, a couple of months ago he was diagnosed with having the lower section of his near hock collaped (steroids to treat ongoing) and he was diagnosed with kissing spine (which the old owner knew but we wont go into that here!!). :'( I asked my vet if realistically they actually thought I would be able to ride him, even just as a hack again - she shrugged her shoulders and shook her head, then said Im sorry :'(.

Dealer has offered me a full refund as I caught him out (with the help of the owners who sent him back beforehand - internet finds you out everything!!) but I have to return the horse so that is not going to happen - he already sold onto me once knowing all the problems this horse has and I have no doubt he will try it again, which is unfair on both the horse and the potential new owners.

Now the issue is that he is not good in the field (did tendon and splint in the field, decided he was bored at 6am after only being out 10 hrs and went mental) so I cant just retire him and stick him in a field, I have to realistically think about PTS. If I had to give him back for my money I would arrange with the dealer to either PTS whilst he was with me, or take him to his yard where a vet will be waiting on site :'( - I wouldnt leave my baby until its over as dont want him being sold on, this dealer although famous is ruthless and not what you would expect of a man who is so highly thought of by a lot of people!! But he is fully insured for loss of use so could go down that route as well. What would you all do??

But horses are my life, I cant see myself without one, so the next thing is do any of you lovely people want to help me look. 16.2+ to carry 12st (on a diet :P!). Im 5ft 9. Currently own a 17hh belgum warmblood and hes great till he broke!
Looking for an allrounder sort, 5+ yrs old, mare or gelding (but no marish mares) to do RC level and unaffiliated level riding at first with the potential to do more. Budget of 7k.

I have owned horses for 10 yrs (am 20 now) and just need one positive one (first was a lunatic, second broke his leg and had to be pts, third had kissing spine and wobbles, fourth was a 14.3 cob to get my confidence back after first and third truly tried to kill me and fith is my gorgeous boy now with navicular and kissing spine!). Will be taken up to university with me, competed and ridden regularly and I would bring the one other girl I would have as a sharer (great friend of mine) to veiw so the owners can meet the two people that would ride any new horse. Also take instructor back, always have a 5 stage vetting with X-rays (yes I did for current horse - vets now given a full refund as "cant" produce the x-rays - stupidly used dealers vet, always using own from now on!!)

If you hear of anything let me know, sounds odd but I need another to move onto. They have a 5* home with me etc. P.S. Love jhowards mare before people suggest it - just wish she wasnt in Devon! Im in watford so will travel 70 miles any direction from there, or up at uni on the notts/leics border (at notts uni on sutton bonington camups!), again 70 miles from there.

Sorry for the uber long thread! Thank you :)

I'm sooooo sorry for you. I really think the only option is to have the horse PTS asap, and then persue the dealer thru the small claims court / trading standards.

If the horse has so many things wrong, especially kissing spine, he would be unrideable again, and if he hoons in the field, it's not really an option. So sorry to have to say it, but i would sort out PTS and take things from there. (((((((((hugs))))))) sm x

Snowy - so sorry to hear this unfortunate news. But just would like to say i really admire you for not shipping him back to the dealer. Not many people would do that these days, they'd think of themselves before the horses welfare. & IMO i would have him put to sleep.

I really hope your luck turns and you find a horse you definately deserve :)

Yikes lass.

Huge hugs and thoughts for you and your lad.

I would talk to vet and insurance: Either the LOU or PTS due to incapable of living a normal horse life.

I quite agree re. the not going back to the dealer. I wonder if there is any way you can claim the refund even if the horse is PTS. Definately need a conversation with vet and insurance, and possibly an equine solicitor.

I completely understand the need for another horse. It's in your blood. No doubt the good people on here will help you look :)

RE: LOU be careful. Had a similar experience and Petplan after 8 months of deliberating refused to pay out as the conditions were 'pre-existing' so I would try to go down the route of getting the money back from the dealer.

:( what a nightmare

Poor you, echo what Half-Halt has said about not sending him back to the dealer. good on you.

As you can see from my location <-- I am not that far from you so will keep my ears out for you.

I am so sorry for what you are going through but what a brave and caring owner you are, so many people would probably send the horse back to the dealer without a thought about it but you are definitely being a responsible adult about the whole situation. Massive Hugs to you and your Boy!

As for a horse I know of a lovely TB for sale, he is 16.1hh, 10 years old and although still quite green he has masses of potential and learns very quickly. He is a really nice sensible lad and only priced at £2000. He's in Shropshire though so probably to far from you. He's not mine but a friend is selling him.

Good luck in your search :)

Thank you all, I am in bits really just thinking about it!! Spent so much time with him chilling his scatty warmblood brain out and now this happens :'(.

The LOU wasnt for the kissing spine (ongoing that the dealer knew about), when that was found out I had steroid injections which worked and he was still doing everything for about 3 weeks (started jumping again etc all fine - at least I have videos of that and the last time I rode him I just suddenly needed a pic and a friend took it -odd i know). But it was just yesterday that we found out about navicular/tendon etc and that would give me loss of use - did look at going for LOU for back but vet said as steroids have worked and surgery is still an option there is no point. However with navicular he will never jump again :(. But will deff look thoroughly into getting money back from dealer and trying to get him to agree to him being PTS :'(.

I hope you succeed Snowy.. hope the dealer decides to do the right thing also in having him pts instead of just thinking about his pocket.

Makes me angry, he obviously has no regard for other people or the horse. If he disagrees about giving your money back, seek legal advice. If you can prove he knew the horse had problems and didn't tell you about them, you can claim under the sale of goods act i believe as he was miss-sold to you i.e the horse isn't fit for the purpose of which he was intended.

I am selling my stunning 16.2 bay Irish bred 7 yo gelding. Good flatwork, really jumps well. Lovely temperament. I really want him to go to the right home and you sound ideal, please PM for more details.
