Had to phone the police whilst out riding today!!

I have been in similar situations... it is really scarey. Your horse is a star - you must be so proud of her.

Where I used to ride was on council owned common land. One lady used to walk her really vicious collie dog over the land and regularly let him off the lead to run riot. He would come over and really go for the horses. One time, I dismounted because I had a couple of kids with me, handed my horse to one of them (silly I know) and ran at him to chase him away.

His owner came running over and yelled at me for shouting/chasing her dog saying he had as much right as us to be there. She also insinuated we weren't allowed to ride on the common (although I had contacted the council to check) and was generally extemely rude and unpleasant.

After that, I sure she used to deliberately send her dog up to bother us when she saw us. She had a bit of a bee in her bonnet about us being 'posh' or 'stuck up' for riding horses despite the fact that we had a couple of cobs on an inner city farm and all lived local... the girls I rode with were all local girls under 14yrs as well.

some people are so irresponsible.

I have been chased by a boxer out riding too - the owner was nearby but his answer was to let my horse kick his dog to teach it a lesson!!! Except my horse is far better behaved and wouldn't dream of it!!

In the end I got off and threatened it with the schooling whip, and b*llocked the owner for being an irresponsible sh*t.

My horse was attacked by a farm dog while hacking out on a public road. I went to see the farmer who was extremly rude so I contacted the local 'Dog Warden and also the local 'Community Police Officer'.

They each visited him and warned him that if he did not keep his dog under control at all times that they would prosecute him and have the dog destroyed.

Owners of dogs are responsible for keeping their dogs under control at all times which includes bridlewys.
