I have been in similar situations... it is really scarey. Your horse is a star - you must be so proud of her.
Where I used to ride was on council owned common land. One lady used to walk her really vicious collie dog over the land and regularly let him off the lead to run riot. He would come over and really go for the horses. One time, I dismounted because I had a couple of kids with me, handed my horse to one of them (silly I know) and ran at him to chase him away.
His owner came running over and yelled at me for shouting/chasing her dog saying he had as much right as us to be there. She also insinuated we weren't allowed to ride on the common (although I had contacted the council to check) and was generally extemely rude and unpleasant.
After that, I sure she used to deliberately send her dog up to bother us when she saw us. She had a bit of a bee in her bonnet about us being 'posh' or 'stuck up' for riding horses despite the fact that we had a couple of cobs on an inner city farm and all lived local... the girls I rode with were all local girls under 14yrs as well.
some people are so irresponsible.
