Had to rush my whippet to vets...nearly lost her((((vibes)))

She was barely breathing when I reached my vets

I had her out for her normal mad run with my other dogs....and she looks slighly over exerted running around after the bigger lurchers...so OH put her back on the leash.(pretty shocked as she is a very fit little girl and has no probs keeping up)
She calmed down nicely....we got back home....and she had some tea after resting for another hour but did not eat much.

She then started to salavate/and was very raspy from the chest, then urinated dark brown in colour...I freaked scooped her up and drove like a nutter to my work....she was almost unconsious by the time I burst through the door

She had a haemoglobin level of 9

she is having on going tests but has improved massively, have left her in for the night and she is on a glucose drip...my vets thinks she has severley over exerted herself, but maybe underlying problems. (((((vibes))))) if any spare, she already had a pretty crappy time before I rescued her.

MASSIVE THANKYOU everyone...I was there at the crack of dawn to collect her...im sure my vets love me for that

She walked out herself and was over the moon to see us, she was still very weak but 100% improvement to the collapsed dog I left last night, her bloods where back to normal today.
Apparently this can be common in this type of breed and also in racehorses(u learn something new everyday)

She is now in her favourite spot...on my bed

she has to have tests on Wednesday to determine any long term damage, vet was a little worried about her kidney function, but othewise my more than fabulous vet is happy for her to rest and happy with her recovery, seems it was a case of over exertion...but now means she has to slow down even though she is young as she may not fair so well the next time

Thats what Im worried asbout...it's going to be so hard...she is the most playfull active dog I own and loves chasing the others

but needs must.

Yep...this is what my vet had in mind when examining her....have read up on it since got her home, it looked to me like she was in heart failure which is how this condition can end up and they can die within 48 hours

This condition occurs commonly in heat or lack of warm up...im thinking the latter, as it was freezing and p1ssing down

the one thing she did not have was a temperature, but she was having painfull muscle spasms.
The brown urine alarmed me greatly this is when I though f*ck it's her kidneys and ran for dear life to the car with her.

I guess I never though of her having this as she is super fit, have seen it in other dogs but no where near as severe, she had alot of symptoms going on and it happened scarily fast.

All is well although she is still very weak in herself...keeps wandering down stairs then moaping back of to bed....she will have to be rested now for a good few weeks and then kept a close eye on.

Stella and I are thinking of the lovely skinny girl. It's hard trying to keep the fit ones still, but I'm sure you'll get a good handle on her new requirements. Will she be allowed to run at all or leash walks only?

She seems/looks much better today still not her usual cheeky self but she is pottering around more this morning

I think it will be steady leash exercise for a few weeks then walking her with my older more calm dogs when of leash so she has nothing to chase around to exert herself.

ive heard of this happening...something to do with the rate of speed that these dogs do something to do with the blood not getting enough of something(sorry to be very vague)
on one occasion when my whippet had ran to almost collapse on a sunny day...i also panic and had to carry her home and put straight in to the bath of cold water to get her temperture down...then after awhile she was fine...this sort of thing tends to happen to the fittest of dogs so it wasnt because she was unfit
