Hi,

I've been a lurking member for a little while but had to share pics of our new boy, who arrived on loan yesterday. He is an 8yr old New Forest x TB and is a little super star! He is in very poor condition due to the actions of a previous loaner -he came back looking like a hat rack after being underfed and with incredibly sore feet after they took his shoes off and worked him hard on the road, how people can do that is beyond me. So, our job is to build his topline back up so he is back to his usual condition and then my daughter can get out to PC and local shows etc with him - exciting!

He is just so lovely, affectionate and very responsive, we have fallen in love with him totally - did that when we went to see him first time! He has been out in the field today and then he taught my daughter to lunge, so a busy start but such a gentleman, not a foot wrong with impeccable manners.

Anyway, copious pics attached - sorry for boring anyone! If anyone can suggest any good ways for building top line, other than lunging etc then please do share!

Hope you have lots of fun with him :)

He really reminds me of Andy, Kokos gelding who I think is the same breed X.

He looks lovely - just be careful with the "feeding up" as he might not be such a nice boy when he looks more covered! Personally, I would keep him looking a bit poor until you are all more settled in your relationship. Best of luck.

he's lovely , :) I'm sure with lunging and lots of steady hacking and hill work you'll soon get some muscle back on him, my big girl is a TBx and she loses muscle on her back end so easy which in turn makes her look neglected:( she doesn't lunge so i just hack out to start with and try to find some hills to powerwalk up to build up some muscle before i start schooling:) I have just taken a full tb on loan who had lost weight and condition so he has no butt either, he's been back in work for 3 weeks now and is just starting to show improvement :)

Thank you all!

Yes, we are 'feeding him up' in a cautious way obviously! We are also aware he may be more lively once in tip top shape but as the daughter loves to have her hair on fire and is pretty used to naughty ponies we will hopefully (fingers crossed!) be equipped to deal with a bit of extra fizz!

There are some lovely hills (not so lovely on foot!) close by so hill work isn't a problem.

Thanks Brighteyes - good point! He is on Spillers conditioning chaff, Top Spec calm and condition nuts and speedibeet plus ad lib hay/hayledge mixed. Does this sound like a suitable steady build up balance - this is what he was put back on by his owner?
