I used to get really bad chilblains on my hands, feet and thighs. two years ago i got a bioflow bracelet and the first winter i got a few (hardly any) Then nothing, it is really good, i highly recommend getting one!

Another vote for Body Shop Hemp hand cream! Stinks a bit like an old hippy but its damn good for the pandies! I have a copper bracelet to help with chilblains

You have my sympathy, my poor hands really suffer during the winter too! Agree about Bodyshop hemp stuff, but I also keep Nivea cream at the yard. The secret seems to be to remember to keep using the stuff as often as possible during the day, just using it morning and night deffo not enough! I also smother them in cocoa butter before going to bed.............smells good!!

I've just discovered Neutrogena, Norwegian Formula hand cream. It's silicone based and sorted out my very dry, chapped hands in a couple of days. I'd never have thought it was possible to get results so quickly.

Well worth it. Can't help with chilblains as I've never suffered.

Persist with the latex gloves! I spurned them for years - made my hands feel funny, sweaty, couldn't do stuff etc. My hands got so bad I had to try them and, guess what, you adapt! I can do anything now with TWO pairs on. Two pairs adds warmth so no need for woolly gloves on top. Wearing them has transformed my winter experience as I am very prone to splits in the fingers that can make me almost sob!

I sometimes forget I've got them on and find myself out and still wearing them. I defy any cream to do as good a job. They are the disposable, loose type by the way, (Pound shop) not the clingy surgeons type.

PMSL Same here.
I too vote for Hemp hand cream, another I have found excellent was from the xmas market in bath from a company whose website I am getting off my hand cream lid!
I have the 'gardeners honey' hand cream, its a barrier cream as well, its so lovely, and my hands can be best described as looking like chicken feet when not moisturised!!

i haven't had chilblains since i started wearing enough layers on my torso... toasty core = more blood pumped to extremities = no chilblains.
also, do not get into a hot bath or shower until you are really warm first, getting in with ice-cold skin always gave me chilblains.

ditto gloves - you can get used to anything. my hands look okay now (still got calluses but that's inescapable i think) but used to look wrecked.

I use latex gloves too. They do make a huge difference, but the Neutrogena is the icing on the cake.

Thank god you lot have horrible dry, split hands too!!! Sorry, but thought I was the only one with them! And are the dry bits on your hands, especially my thumbs, constantly black???? The dirt seems to get in the dry "cracks" and won't come out!!!

No idea how the copper bracelet works, but since wearing one for my ageing joints, my chilblains have gone too! The arthritis is a hell of a lot better too!

I suffer with ezcema on my hands, they are extremely dry, cracked and at their worst they are very sore and bleeding. I was diagnosed with it at the doctors, and now I have steroid cream and a base cream that has to go on at least every hour.

If your hands are really bad, you should go to the doctors to see if you could get a cream to help clear them up.

You should get a good cream, and wear fingerless gloves at the yard if you don't like wearing proper gloves. Derma cream by Simple is supposed to be pretty good

I swing between which ones I use as I like a little variety but Norwegian Formula from Neutrogena, Hemp from Body Shop and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Hand Cream are all wondrous!!

My hands are always, always dry and I often get cracked knuckles

I find that applying a thin layer of cream throughout the day each time I've washed and dried my hands and applying a ton of cream at night before bed taking the time to massage it into my skin helps an awful lot when I remember to do it!

What do you wear when the weather gets really cold?

If I am on the yard, I will put waterproof over-trousers on as these really keep the cold out, helping to alleviate the risk of chilblains etc, without too much bulk. I also have a cheapie ski suit I bought from a local discount ski wear shop. M&M Direct on the internet tend to carry reasonably priced skiwear (among other things...but not related to horses)

If you suffer when riding, what about some thermal jods? I bought some from Equestrian Clearance and they are actually quite thick, compared to normal jodhpurs. I believe there are some which are made with neoprene in them as well, for even more thermal qualities. Mine are just thin fleece lined, and in cream as I did buy them for hunting, so tend not to wear them day to day.

I have fleece lined half chaps which I can also wear in cold weather and a 3/4 length riding coat which also covers my thighs. You could even put a wrap around exercise sheet on your horse and wrap it over your legs to help keep you warm.

I ride in Ariat Grasmeres and have some sealskinz gloves. Toastie feet and hands.

My vote goes to Body Shop Hemp hand cream.

For the first winter ever I haven't had splits in the top of my thumbs the reason being I lather my hands in vaseline at bedtime and wear cotton gloves overnight. I realise this option is probably only open to those of us who sleep alone or are too old to care. It'll be a nightcap next, bedsocks, hot water bottle and small dog already winter night essentials!
