I have a black horse who looks good but needs a bit more weight and muscle and a better coat for a show in January. Has anyone got any serious tips to help me, show secrets very welcome ;) thanks

For January, you best bet is showsheen for the coat, or clipped and then hot ragged, followed by showsheen and plenty of rugs. While there might be a small difference in weight, the muscle change will be limited, unless your show is at the end of January, and even then will require a lot of dedication in terms of work, and the quality of work.

You can try micronised Linseed for shine and condition, and a good balancer with added lysiene (sp.) if not in the balancer, and truly add lib forage.

Havens slobbermash.

This a pure TB fed on it:

He looks the best he ever has but it can hot them up too!

Micronised linseed all the way. I feed my 17hh ISH 1/2 scoop A&P Cool and Collected, 1/2 mug micronised linseed and a big scoop of Dengie Molasses free twice a day and he looks fantastic. He also has a 25ml spoon of brewer's yeast night and morning which may help as he was always a bit girthy and I was wondering whether to get him scoped. I haven't even clipped him and his coat is so shiny you can almost see yourself in it. He was ribby when he arrived in summer. And the girthiness has gone completely,

Put CORN OIL in his feed this is amazing for putting weight on and gives them amazing shine!!! all supermarkets sell it about £1.95 litre, my 24year old is shiney and putting weight on well since she has had this poured onto her feed!!!!! xx

Use Avon Skin So Soft oil - it's a natural insect repellant (only thing that kept the horseflies away this summer) and also makes them so soft and shiny, also can use it in mane/tail - like Canter Coat Shine and mane and tail conditioner but only £2 a bottle. Winner!

I haven't used what others have suggested for weight gain but this is what I feed my horse, decent adlib Hay and she has 2 feeds a day of a level stubbs scoop of Hi Fi Lite and 1/4 - 1/2 (depending on work load that day) of Dodson and Horrell Build up Conditioning Cubes and about 1 small scoop of speedibeet (Quite wet) she is also turned out on pretty good winter grazing from about 6.30 -4pm everyday and for coat shine, I brush her everyday :)

I'm sorry I don't understand the rationale behind feeding Hi-Fi Lite with conditioning cubes. Surely a 'full-fat' chaff would be more effective.

My mare lost a lot of weight through winter so we have her on a more fibre based diet. She seems to be loving Dengie alpha a oil chaff which helps to condition/weigh gain x

Sorry , only just seen this.
I have tried quite a few different feeds, she's been on Hi Fi original, Alfa A oil and Mollichop, with pasture mix and conditioning cubes. I have found the diet quoted works best for my horse. It's not for weight gain, it's mainly maintenance as I find feeding ad lib hay works best for weight gain on my horse.

:)

Baileys outshine it really does make your horse shine!
This! Mine has 3 feeds a day of chaff, Outshine, Bailey's No4 and sugarbeet plus the Myoplast supplement - varied feedback on the Myoplast but I reckon it's made a difference. The Outshine gives them an amazing coat.

Feed corn oil,a dash in am and pm feed!!! its only £2 for a litre in supermarkets, fab for weight gain and puts amazing shine on there coats, its got to be thebest oil that i have ever used after using codliver and veg oil for years xx

Hi, I have a skinny TB, who lost all muscle when he was out of work from nov 2012 when he went lame with palmar hoof pain. Then found out that he also had kissing spine and was not able to move his spine where the saddle goes, he was then operated on and has been fed cool stance copra, oats, linseed plus magnesium salt and pro hoof since march of last year. He had his op for kissing spine in June of 2013 and this is the difference his feeding regime has made. He also gets ad lib hay.
