Hey im wanting to do equine business at university am off to open days in september but wanted peoples opinions who have been too any of these and has any opinions good or bad! And if anyone knows of any livery yards with regular turnout and an arena close to hartpury names and contact details would be very much appreciated so i can check them out :-) thankyou

I know a few professional equine establishments local to me that won't touch a hartpury student with a barge pole. I know not everyone is the same but something worth considering before making a decision.

I looked at both and would have hands down chosen Royal Ag, people I know who have been there love it. Unfortunately it wasn't practical for me to go there but I wish I had!!

That's a rather sweeping statement Kokopelli....
My niece has just completed a 2 year extended diploma in horsebreeding at Hartpury and has been offered several jobs, but she likes the place so much that she's doing an equine sports science degree starting in sept. I have heard a few things about the lower level courses but I think at degree level, you can't go far wrong.

Like I said not all places are the same and not all students are bad (in fact most I know would be an amazing addition to any yard) but these places I know of are very well respected and I just worry its hard enough to get a job as it is.

I used to live near Hartpury and I studied twice at RAC (BSc and MSc). It depends what you want from your time at either place and what you want to do afterwards.

There are obviously good and bad students at both institutions and each suit different people.

Most professionals within the industry that I've come across would choose a similarly qualified RAC student over a Hartpury one (and I was part of an interview process at a leading horse feed manufacturer which did just that)

Hartpury has an amazing set up, fantastic facilities but I would search on this forum for some further discussion by past and present students. :/

I went to hartpury. Given my time again to do an equine degree I would avoid like the plague. RAC is a better community with the students and they have more student nights etc. I didn't enjoy hartpury at all and found it similar to a torture device. Obviously I cannot comment on the lecturing quality of RAC but I will answer any PMs as to why I didn't enjoy it.

I am currently studying at RAU and I am glad made the desision to come here. It has a reputation of being full of snobs when I was looking around but couldn't be any more different! I'm just going into my second year. Lectures and lecturers are fantastic and they give you a good grounding in business and science alike. If you want a more 'hands on' approach with riding and yard duties go to hartpury as the ag does none of that. Happy to answer any queries you have about RAU :)

I have no personal experience of either, but everyone I know who went to RAC really rated it and I've never heard much good about the degree courses at Hartpury
