Well as you know i have torn the ligaments in my ankle after a fall. I'm really hoping to be walking by badminton but im a bit worried incase im not as at present i still can't weight bear at all.
I am adament im not missing badminton so just wondered how everyone else has managed badminton when injured?

ta very much :)

I haven't but I'd be suprised if you can manage it. When I did the same as you and was on crutches I found it exhausting to travel any great distance on them (especially if you're trying to keep up with other people) and would imagine the undulations in the ground would make it even more tiring. I had quite strong upper body strength too!

yeah ^ that is crossing my mind. I suppose if im walking aided by crutches it may be managable. otherwise im planning on making it to the big screen armed with coats and blankets and camping out for the day.

Not badminton but did do olympia last year on crutches and wouldnt reccomend it, as said very hard to keep up especially as its outdoors and can be boggy, also people can be totally oblivious to you, even though i had a massive cast on i still got knocked into and nearly sent flying on numerous occasions!

why not get one of the litle mobility scooter things, though not sure they would make it round the xc!

Ha! a scotter, now that would be funny :) cracking idea though, i don't like them as they seem to get in the way but im guessing crutches would just as much.

I did it when i was 8 months pregnant and was on crutches as had pelvic problems.
It is doable as long as you accept you wont see as much.
Badminton is also more crutch friendly than somewhere like burghley would be

I torn my cruciate ligament in my knee five years ago and went around on my crutches. I was exhausted and found the ground difficult with the unevenness and people bumping you. I reckon a scooter would have been much better! Good luck hope you enjoy it and recover from your injury.

Ha ha, am thinking Madge from Benidorm at Badminton.

Havent tried Badminton on crutches, but would not fancy it personally. Plus I suspect your body is still battered and needs rest to recover. I would say decamping to one of the big screens is a great idea (unless it tips down with rain), taking a shopping list and getting your friends to shop for you.

I did it in a knee brace and one crutch and it was tiring. A lovely parking steward allowed us to park in the disabled section (without prior arrangement) which was a godsend. I just waved my huge knee brace and crutches at him on the gate :-)

You could also take a good chair and take it easy fom fence to fence (probably avoid the big downhill bit to where the corners were etc) and set your chair up at each fence?

I did it with a mobility scooter and crutches after knee surgery two years ago! It was the funniest day of my life :-) we made it the whole way round the cross country! It was tiring but I had two good friends who helped me out all day. I paid for it the next day but it was vital for my mental health (I'd not been out for weeks lost my job and had my two horses pts for different reasons within 6 months of each other). I would recommend going, scooters cheap to hire - but watch out for the hare setting!! It's rather quick!

If I could work out how to do it form my phone would post a pic - I've never laughed so much in all my days!

Xx

Having struggled to walk round Badminton on 2 fully functioning legs one year when it was very muddy, I'd say it was a brave idea to try it on crutches! Crowds and crutches are a bad combo, I found this out when I went out round the bars at university one night. There's nothing worse than someone knocking you off balance and you have to put your sore leg down suddenly.

Mobility scooter could be a great idea though!

I would agree with a lot of the others and say a mobility scooter or set up camp in the main areana. Last year I went about 6 weeks after breaking my collar bone (which wasn't healing anyway) I know it'd totally different, but it was the most tired I have ever been afterwards. Due to not being as fit, and I was very very self conscience of it, I wish I had worn a sling not that I think that would of helped, but I really noticed people banging into me, and hated being in crowds, was tired and in a fair amount of pain by the end!

Friend did Burghley on crutches a few years back, despite the knee deep mud she made it round! It wasn't easy, she was allowed to put weight on both legs but the mud was a nightmare and she fell about 4 times. If it rains i'd scrap the idea and stick to the big screen! Good luck x

I did Burghley on crutches last year and made it the entire way around the xc course although it was tiring. I was lucky in that I could weight bear on my leg so it wasn't as bad. People were mostly pretty nice, got me to the front of some crowds :D

I was going to attempt to go at 6 months pregnant but won't be attending now.

I think if you are willing to get somewhere early and sit down and stay down, you'd be ok, but I find it a long day on working legs let alone on crutches (or indeed pregnant!)

I tried it a few years ago but wouldn't attempt it again.....
Hired a scooter and the battery ran out half way round the XC :o
Couldn't really shop in the scooter either and got very cold sitting waiting for my friends :(
If it's a nice day you could park yourself in front of the big screen, otherwise I wouldn't bother

hmm, i suspect the red button at home may be your friend...
when i was on crutches (and couldn't weight bear at all on right leg) even a trip to the shops was a nightmare, people are SO ignorant, they bash into you even though you're on crutches!
if you can get a mobility scooter booked that's definitely the way to go if you're determined, i reckon.

Thanks for the tips, I think I have it planned.........magic super healing powers and get better :)

On a serious note it happend about 10 days ago and we still have 2 weeks to go so I'm planning on lots of rest and hope to be walking by then. We are going to head down on the friday so it will be quieter and then watch xc on red button with a few beers:)

Good idea Aregona - I went several years ago when it was VERY wet and not long after a bad riding accident (pinned and plated right femur etc.). I could barely stand in the muddy conditions and was unable to walk the course and as for the trade stands............a complete NO, NO!

Enjoy your beers and watch in the comfort of the Red Button.

PS A bottle of Champers would be even better - think of the money you'll have saved not going on XC day..!!

You may find that the crutches catch on some of the larger jumps as you go over them. I would be more inclined to recommend attempting Badminton on a horse to be honest, but if not possible simply don your crutches with an excessive amount of dead sheep and a five point breastplate and you will be fine!!

yes, 2 years ago i did exactly the same as you, only 3 days before badminton... yet i camped there for all of it and still managed to walk the xc course and go out every night.... you will be fine!! :) lots of vet wrap or something very padded on the crutches though and comfy shoes! ha :p

I recommend buying a pass for the members enclosure. A view of the dressage, indoor screens, civilised eating area and nice loos. A thoroughly enjoyable way to 'do' Badminton. Not crowded so shouldn't get pushed around. They used to offer drive rounds of the cross country for less mobile people - in Mitsubishis of course. Ask at the secretary's. You usually just have to turn up at a certain time. They get you close to most of the more interesting fences and can probably get out and have a closer look.
