A horse's entire body swelling up after an injury??? And I mean swelling right up this horse has doubled in size overnight, even the head......it also feels "crackly" when you touch the skin......also would you call the vet??

um... yes, i'd call the vet

The crackling of the skin you describe sounds very much like a possible bacterial infection of some kind and needs a vet urgently given how severe it is.

never heard of this before but it doesnt sound good at all....I would be calling the vet straight away.....please let us know what happens....hope everything is ok...

Agree, call the vet.

(Although I have to admit as reading that as WIND (as in breeze/gust/north) up and I was about to post asking about the WIND up condition and had images of inflaited horses...)

if this is for real 9and not just a question about a purely hypothetical situation) then i am sure the OP has called the vet by now.....poor horse though. what a horrible thing to happen to it. COuld a horse survive such a situation?

Had a pony with this at the BHS Rescue Centre years ago - despite immediate and expert vet care, it died! Know of another that had a very similar condition although it didn't extend RIGHT around the body - just chest and neck. It burst open at the site of the original infection and took several YEARS - and many thousands of pounds of veterinary treatment - before it healed, although it didn't recover completely - the site kept breaking down and re-opening!

I'm afraid we'll be saying RIP to this pony in the next 48 hours - or less!

JG see my responses on lilyms other thread, do you know what caused this in those cases.

I suspect gas gangrene clostridia in this case.
